maybe...

prolly your throdle adjustment sensor, mine was jacked a few months back... sound's like yours, cept mine only went to 2k before it slipped... it's not your engine, and, if you go to a GOOD, mechanic then they can fix it, Mazda guilde Tech fixed mine, 60$, a new one was like 300-ish, so... but, have it checked, also, make sure you have the right size spark plugs in it, previous owner my have put the wrong ones, because FC ones are expensive...

The slipping clutch is exactly that: a bad clutch.

The other problem (only revving to 3700 RPM) is a problem with the secondary injection system (under 3800 RPM, the "primary" two injectors shoot fuel - after 3800, all four do). Could be some bad grounds, could be bad injectors. Electrical problems are the most likely cause, but are also the hardest to duplicate. If you're handy with a multimeter and circuit diagrams, carry both around with you and bust 'em out when the car's acting up. If not, take it to a rotary shop - they'll know what's up and where to look. This is not, however, a problem your average mechanic would quickly be able to solve, due to it's fuel-injected-rotary specific nature.

Good luck, and if you ever so much as utter the phrase "go horriblecanes" again, I'll henceforth withhold all future technical support as punishment, until you realize the error of your ways and admit the supremacy and superiority of the best team in the WORLD, the FSU Seminoles :p

j/k
