My Dilemna- electrical is all wack!

Well first electrical problem after getting my car running (86' n/a BTW)-
1. Sometimes only one headlight pops up but now i think it stays at one.
2. Tachometer stopped for a day or less. Then began working again.
3. Oil Pressure gauge didn't work one time I started it. But its working again.
4. Now my headlights don't turn on. The motor works for one but the light is off, even the brights dont work for either headlight.

Where should I start to investigate?

do the headlights pop up but stay off or just nothing at all?
The oil pressure guage is stupid and you might as well get a nice aftermarket one.
I'm serious, no one's oil gauge works.
And you should check the signal going to the tach.

only one pops up now, but no lights
about the oil gauge what causes it? Just bad connections?
I'll probably check the tach if it ever goes screwy again but how do I check the signal?

yeah the oil gauge connection could be just dirty.
Find a wiring diagram to find the the signal wire for the tach.

Early series four have a external relay that controls each headlight retract motor. They are located on the bulkhead that the headlights mount to. On the engine side of that bulkhead. Swap b/t the left and right relays and see if the problem travles to the other side of the car.

The no lights could be a number of things. Personaly I'd pull the plug off one of the headlights and ohm the light out to see if the filiment's are burned out and then put the meter on the plug that feeds them to see if power is getting to the plug when the lights are put to on, high, low beams.

The tach isn't worth trying to fix since the problem does not exist anymore. The tach signal goes from the trail coils the ECU's large plug and then to the combination meter. I wouldn't waste time figuring this one out unless it happens numerous times.

A lot is assumed. We assume the headlight fuse is good in the engine bay etc.
You really need to look at the wiring diagrams in the FSM to figure out the headlight. You need it to find the dimmer relay, headlight relay and the retract motor relays.

Go to the following thread and go to the bottom of that thread where I inserted three/four jpgs showing the approx location of serveral relays.
