What color is the smoke?

White = coolant seals gone
Black = running rich
Blue = burning oil

Probably needs a rebuild, AFAIK.

Mine has started to smoke at higher RPMs, and from what I've heard that means the side seals are probably going out. If yours smokes constantly, your seals are probably gone.

Burning oil @ high rpm and under decel is usually a sign of worn oil control rings. Change the oil and switch to a quality 20W50 oil which is thicker than the standard 10W30 you probably run. Also, get a bottle of STP "stop smoke" and add it at the oil change. If you only get smoke @ high rpm and the seal is a bit brittle, this usually helps a lot and elminates smoking in many cases. Before I had the TII motor installed, my last NA motor was a smoker. Perfect compression, but burned a lot of oil on high rpm and decel. I found out that lots of rotary people had used stop smoke products with success so I gave it a shot (it's often called motor honey). After a few days, it stopped my smoking and I continued to add a bottle at every oil change. Without the additive, it began to smoke again little by little. This kept the oil seals in good shape without smoking for about 40K miles until they totally blew out.

The color of the smoke can be deceptive. What does the smoke smell like? Sweet?

hopefully hed know what burning coolant smells like. if your car makes smoke that smells like anything other than gas, its probably coolant. its a pretty unmistakeable smell.

Take a sniff and if you get dizzy from it, it's probably bad injectors getting stuck. That's what my problem has been lately. I can no longer warm it up in the morning w/o pulling out of the garage. The stink is too nasty now.

Stink can also be caused by no cats.. if he has no emissions i think its gonna be hard to smell if its sweet or not.

Is it normal for the car to smoke white smoke on a really cold morning?

A couple of puffs is ok, big clouds means trouble. If you're burning oil, it should be blue and you might smell it. Also, check oil level frequently...

I would guess the blue oil is the oil rotary_punk poured in the combustion chamber so the motor would have compression

Does oil work too? I thought trans fluid did the trick.

I think there's quite a few things you can use.

ATF
Motor Oil
MMO

few others... correct me if I'm wrong.

my cats are gutted. Can that cause some extra smoke at high rpms?

I dunno my car does not smoke at all and I have the RB turbo back exhaust (no cats). Sounds like someone was trying to build compression or a oil control seal is shot.
