Unhappy My car "pings"

Hey all... my car makes a pinging noise, like metal on metal kind of deal from what sounds like the exhaust.
I comes after hard acceleration and I let off at like 6000rpms it makes this noise once.
I dont think that its backfiring cause I thought backfiring was louder and deeper than this.
Could it be detination that is amplifying through my exhaust??

Has anyone else heard this in their car? or anyone know what it is?

Thanks

Yep, its detonation. Check your plugs and be vary careful until you get this matter taken care of.

Are your spark plug wires in the right places?
Can you verify ignition timing is within spec?

mine does kinda the same thing, if i drive hard and then let off the gas at high rpm, lets say 5-6, the exhaust will let off some small pops, bad??????

I had the same pinging sound, when my Cranes Cams Ignition Box died preventing my Leading Pack from firing. Do you have a lose of power along with the pinging?

My NA did that until I got a tuneup.

My TII did that because my BOV was sticking on humid cool days.

I'd recommend getting a tuneup first, and make sure your within OEM boost levels.

60% chance it just needs a tuneup
30% chance you have a vacuum leak
10% chance your TPS is shot.

ps, when im driving hard, i have loud backfires between shifts depending on how hard im driving.
so im assuming the small pops at high rpm is ok? cool.

hmm... you folks sure that its detination?? Its AFTER I let off the throttle, not at WOT.

Ted, my timing is correct... or at least it should be (to one of the points). I had a timing gun on it and set it to one of the knotchs in the pully.
I thought that the wires were in the correct spot... hmm... ill double check but i dont think they are.

Vaughnc, its been doing that ever since the new engine went in (i dont know aboot before cause i picked the car up with a blown motor). and its done it all the time after break in, even after oil changes and such... maybe one of my vac lines is on wrong or something and maybe my tps is messed... ill check those out.

Thanks guys

man whatever im so sick of afterburn and the pop pop pop poping over and over i mean damn if i wanted something to pop id make popcorn

the poping b/w gear shifts is quite normal

snufelewtwiusocjg how ever you spell it what your describing is the sound of detination thats why people think it is that but if you could maybe describe fifferently because it usually doesnt happen on the down rev
it could possibly just be backfiring or afterburn as others call it... sometimes the afterburn will be as loud as a 12 gauge going off sometimes it will be very quiet just depends on how you drive

Its always just a SINGLE ping... well kind of a "ting", you know the sound of metal on metal in a hollow area.
I havent heard anything from the engine bay other than that it sounds like an airplane when I downshift haha

Is your exhaust hitting anything when you let off the gas? When you go WOT and let off the gas the exhaust will move abit.. maybe that is causing the ping?

Beat me too it.
Agree, I would check for exhaust hitting somewhere.

If it's a single ping, your engine mount(s) might be bad.&nbsp With the engine off, grab the engine and rock side-to-side.&nbsp If you hear clanking, one or both engine mounts are bad.&nbsp The engine might be torquing over initally and coming back down on the bad engine mount.

in my engine i notice a slight bump when its idling. at higher rpms it doesnt do this. i haven't noticed any ping or knock sounds...its not that loud. it will be sitting at idle and will sound like maybe a "hiccup" in the idle. anyone know what that is?
