is my 91 amped?

i am redoing the audio in my 91 na and was wondering if it came amped from the factory. i know my 88 was. i dont wanna ruin anything or make it sound like **** so i figured i would ask on here. i have looked in the normal places were an amp would be like in the strut towers or under the passanger seat but nothing. it has a tape player and radio, no cd player, 4" speakers in the dash, 4" speakers in the strut tower, and 6.5" in the door.

In my '87 Base the amp for the front was under the passenger side dash area. It was kind of integrated with the passenger speaker setup. Not sure about the rear because all that was torn out and monkey-rigged with an aftermarket head unit when I bought it.

Ya, you should have one under the dash... It's been a while since I did my 90 GXL... but I'm almost positive it was amped/x-overs for the 6" door subs.
The eariler ones (like 88GXL) had an amp at each speaker.

The front speakers are run straight off the deck, the door speakers are run off an amp located behind one of the front speakers, and the rear speakers might be amped depending on the particular model (but the FSM neglects to mention where it is).

If you're planning on upgrading the deck, don't bother with the stock amps. Modern head units put out more power than those old amps and will probably just fry them. Either bypass them or run new wires.

Coupes with audio systems Type 1, 2, 3 & 4 have a door woofer amp just below the glove box as well as in coupe type 1 audio systems there is a front speaker amp located bolted to the bottom of the factory radio.

BTW NZ/Jason, the locations are in the electrical manual for 91, not the body manual.
