must be getting old.. exhaust is too loud

so got the street missile up and going good. almost broke the 1k break in period.
but.. its too loud, and I live on post. I get off work at some screwy hours,
so I don't want to **** off my soft hearted neighbors.
I want to go with a good muffler that will flow very well but kill a lot of the noise.
Any ideas?

its an 86 w/88 turboII 60-1 turbo w/ 3'' outlet and straight piped to a very big can.
I want it as free flowing as possible without making my tinnitus worse lol.
Basically looking to just chop the ex. somewhere in the middle, and splice in a muffler.

any thoughts and constructive input is welcome!

Thanks,
Brendan

just about anything will help over what you have, that is name brand and straight through design. the cans on these ebay exhaust systems offer no noise cancellation whatsoever, in some cases they amplify the sound again just before it exits through an overly massive tip from the muffler that really doesn't absorb any sound at all.

borla, magnaflow, racing beat... pick a couple mufflers and place one in the center of the system and one at the end without a megaphone tip that is proportional to the inlet diameter, turndown tips don't hurt either.

personally i like the RB power pulse mufflers and the Borla XR-1, but they are a bit pricey.

Im curious how much going dual exhaust hurts performance. Anyone know? Having the big center 3" resonator an the dual 2.5" mufflers is great for sound reduction

i ran 3" dp and first muffler then split to 2x2.5" with 1 muffler each and 4" tips, was not loud at all and broke 400rwhp at 18psi on a s4 stockblock, full boost at 3.6k ish on a t04s bb so i dont think it hur performance that bad....

I ran RB and got 357.

The only downside of RB is the weight, but it makes up in durability.

duals don't flow less than a single, it flows equally because the initial 3" bottlenecked the airflow. dual 2.5" will outflow a single 3", it will run quieter so there is benefit to duals and is why mazda used them. most of the bigger names who made exhaust for the 7 also made duals.

you could run a cutout with a flowmaster hush, might look alittle goofy or just don't run it all the way out the back, but in those hours your worried about sound, just switch over.

Throwing in a RB 3" presilencer in place of the straight pipe should go a long way in reducing the sound. Universal Presilencer , 3-inch ID for RX7 1986-1992 - Racing Beat

Just to add to this...

The main pipe before the Y pipe is 2.5 inches in diameter. After the split, the pipes are 2 inches in diameter.

Note: The exhaust dimensions are actually metric, but everything aftermarket is going to be in inches so that will get you so close and good enough.

thats a bit small for a turbo engine, ideal for a modded n/a but not for even a stock turbocharged car with any performance goals.

^This!

Save yourself the hassle, and go with a RB catback, the rev one if you can afford it. I went through the same thing as you. I had a 3in (similar to the one that corkstports used to sell) single side catback, with a RB 3in downpipe, and it was WAY too loud. Added a BORLA XR1 muffler as a mid pipe, and it was better, but still lound enough to attract unwanted attention (AKA the police).

Went with a custom 4in downpipe and midpipe, to a racing beat REV catback (y pipe entrance modified to 4in) and it is the BEST exhaust investment that I've done.
