MT fluid

MT fluid
Searched and reviewed the FSM which gives only one number for the amount of GL-5 needed...
Before we installed the MT during the AT->MT swap, we pulled the little square drain plug and drained it all over night.
When we went to install the tranny, we of course pulled the shifter. And when we tilted it all kinds of fluid poured out of the shifter hole. Is the shifter "reservoir" separate and distinct from the rest of the tranny fluid?
The reason I ask is I have std Lucas GL-5 in the tranny to clean out the "old crap of unknown origin" for the first week or so and then I'll put the RP GL-5 in. But since the shifter reservoir didn't drain via the little plug, I was thinking I should just go ahead and put the RP in the shifter reservoir now since sucking out the Lucas in a week would be annoying.
thx!

The factory does not fill the rear-most shifter extention housing.
For the most part, the shifter extension is not connected with the main gearbox section except for a tiny passage at the top of the transmission.
Thus, the only way for fluid to travel from the main gearbox section back into the shifter extension housing is to slosh over the top.
...or, drop the rear part of the trans lower than the front.
I usually don't fill the rear shifter extension housing, cause the fluid tends to leak out of the shifter level hole unless you have boots that are in good shape.

Thx, RETed
Cool. Thx. Actually, we only have an inner boot and a shifter boot. The middle boot set is on its way from Madzatrix.
So if people fill it just to get rid of that last 1/2 quart that's left over after filling the tranny, we'll leave it empty then!
