Moving stock TMIC to front
Moving stock TMIC to front
I've just about got this completed. I've moved my radiator back a few inches, and I'm going to mount my stock TMIC in front of the radiator. I was just curious how much extra HP I can expect from getting that off the top of the HOT engine, and down where it's getting fresh air?
Also, is 14-15psi about max I'd want to push through a stock IC?
Would high 12's be too much to expect from my setup? I've got my mods listed in my vbgarage thingy....
Any input would be appreciated.

Also, in helping the opinions of if high 12's is doable with my setup...when I ran my 13.4, it was at 11ish PSI, and I should be running 13-14 now that I got an a/f gauge so I know that I'm putting enough fuel in. My IC was still on top, and now it's going to be moved forward.
Also, the PS is going to be removed, and swapped out for the manual rack. So, that's supposed to free up a couple horsies.
SO, high 12's?? In my dreams w/street tires?

moving the STOCK intercooler to the front isnt going to do **** for 1/4 mile times; might even cause you to run slower since there will be more turbo lag due to more pipe to fill up. And p/s isnt going to free up that much power, more for weaight reduction and cleaning up the engine bay. I say no 12's for you.

I'd say it'll help. At least it won't be cooking on top of the UIM while you're waiting to run. You might have increased lag, but as long as you use a conservative diameter piping, I don't think it'll be too bad.
Then again, I've never front-mounted a stock IC before, so...

if you're considering moving to the front, you should consider getting a propper front mount instead. You can get a decent sized one for $300. If you can't swing that look into getting another top mount and have it and yours welded together.

This does not mate up with the stock TB "cap".
Yeah, I was staring at the pics trying to figure out exactly what do you need, but my brain was just too fried.

perhaps a 'little' off topic, but I like your new avatar RETed.
more, 'on-topic' .. What dimensions do people find work well for a street-driven stock turbo S4.. I'm having alot of trouble picking one out. The only real mods i've done is to exhaust .. straight-thru to twin 4.5"
IRL I'm getting enormously different answers from everyone I ask. Looks and Brands don't matter, just quality and performance. I already get quite a bit of lag at low rpm.
Any tips would be appreciated.
jkimbro - sorry to hijack .. seemed an ok question to ask as most people say TMIC in the front has no talent; but i've seen quite a few 7's with similar sized (by sight, in photos) intercoolers in front just not OEM.

I had good results with using a front mounted stock IC. Long highway pulls at 8-12 PSI resulted in the outlet pipe being cool to the touch, while the inlet pipe was WAY too hot to put your hand on. It works well, and if you have access to pipe and spare time, then it's worthwhile.
Thanx guys....Although, I think I cracked my IC on the way to work this morning. I was feelin' a little "froggy" since it was cooler outside (around 60F) so I turned over to my 14PSI setting, and was screwin' around with a couple of cars on the highway. I passed one, and my boost creeped to 17 or so breifly.
Now my boost won't go about 1-2 psi, and anything around -150mm/hg and above I'm getting a siren sounding air leak coming from the IC. This is the suck. Looks like I may end up having to buy a different IC after all.

i was going to use the stocker but i got a Conquest TSI stocker for a good deal. and if you have the factory brackets with it, i literally bolts up WAY to easy....took 60 minutes to do. (i had to cut some metal out to fit the top pipe.

I really gotta work on my launches...... this guys says he's doing 13.4 @ 102 MPH... Geeze.. what was the 60ft time on that run.. i'm running 108-110 MPH at 13.9!!!!! (yes.. I'm a converted V-8 slutomatic drag racer... My RT's are .02 and below... but i still can't get the hang of this "slipping the clutch and keeping the boost up" thing.. my 60ftrs are miserable at 2.3 being the best!!!!!!! I think I'm going to stop concentrating on hitting the tree and just work on getting out of the bosx without boggin the car out (I fixed the spinning like a bitch off the line with the 245 Kuhmo Mx's!!!!!)
ANYWAY.. depending on what your 60 ftrs are... high 12's MAY be dooable with your setup... But, You'll have to dump some weight.... 100lbs is good for a 10th at least....

I would hope that is what it is....I've had it rebuild about a month or two ago...it's still under warranty.
I thought I heard someone say that 14psi is max for the stock IC. Not true?
So, Aaron....you think it could be my compressor wheel rubbing the housing? Or more likely a blown rubber hose somewhere? I'm at work right now, so it'll probably be after work before I can tear into it so see if I can see a blatant problem...
