Mounting an aftermarket head unit in the vent section of the center console?
I've been redesigning my carputer screen placement and finally decided to put it in the double din slot and get a S5 surround because it's not all cracked and broken and has the divider between the vents and logicon.
Phase one is complete:
The screen's plastic has been painted to match the surround and is mounted with metal tabs on the backside and a little bit of hot glue for emergencies. It's in a much nicer place that reduces glare a ton and can't be stolen by simple lifting it off the mounting spindle like it was before.
Now I'm moving onto mounting the head unit. I already moved all the wiring up to the proper location, removed the ducting, then capped it off. Now I need to come up with a mounting solution.
I've been thinking of building a wood frame that's fastened into the dash on the sides, then cutting a plastic cover plate to cover the gaps on the side and top once the HU is mounted.
Has anyone done something similiar with good results?

I wouldn't trust the weight of the HU to be supported by the structure, and $169 is more dough I could be spending on suspension. The screen fits so snugly into the S5 panel as well, I only had to shave off 1/8" total on the sides.
