Motor Shaft play

Motor Shaft play
Hey guys...Well when i was doing my clutch i noticed that my motor had ALOT of play, so i assumed the torrington bearing was out of place. I took apart the front cover, and checked it, it wasnt out of place, so i put everything back together. When i tightened everything back together i pulled on the front pulley and it moved VERY VERY VERY slighty, if at all. Is this right? Im not so sure. When removing everything, i took the lower sprocket off along with the upper, the CAS thing(lol) and the counterweight. I put everything back on EXACTLY as it came off. The only thing i could see being wrong is the CAS thing being upside down...is that possible? Otherwise im lost haha. Any help?

There should be .0016 to .0028 in of play in the shaft. If you can feel it being loose I bet your needle bearings are worn. Yes the "CAS thing" can be upside down. The champfer on one side that is larger/deeper than on the other, that side goes toward the block.
Hope this helps!

You got it!
If the CAS drive gear is backwards, the square corner will slowly seat into the e-shaft radiused corner, leaving end play behind the front pulley flange.
Good work spotting it before any damage was done.
Also - this is one of the reasons for locktite on the front bolt threads.

You only want to have that front bolt un-torqued down when you're working on something in the front stack. Moving the engine around with it off will let that front stack fall apart. There is actually a real gasket you can buy from mazda/mazdatrix that is supposed to go behind that bolt and seal the head of the bolt to the shaft, but gasket sealer works fine there. http://mazdatrix.com/b5.htm
