Motor ID Number

Can someone tell me if there is a way of knowing if an engine as been changed.
Does the ID on the motor correspond with the car Serial/Id number in any way.
If not what are the signs to look for to see if it's the original motor or it has been changed..

regards
Pete

I haven't seen any VINs on the engine.

On an original engine, there is a engine number stamped on the front side housing. It is inline with the front engine hanger. I doubt if you could track it to your car. Someone else might, not you.
