I would first do a complete tune up to the car first before any modding.
Change the Oil, Oil filter, fuel filter, Air Filter, Spark Plugs, Sparl Plug wires. Take your injectors to get cleaned professionaly. Also change the fluids in your tranny, differential, and radiator. I would also do a compression test as well. Check all your belts, and hoses as well make sure you dont have any leaks. I noticed you live in Boca. I currently live in Pompano Beach off the Atlantic Blvd exit off the turnpike. If you need any help let me know.
Also check my old posts, and just keep reading and learning on the forum, however dont listen to everything people on here tell you, because not everyone is right. There are alot of people here that are very knowledgable like, Ted, and NZ Convertible, and Hailers, and other guys as well. If you need an awesome rotary mechanic at good prices let me know.

^ Do the above first, along with replacing anything else that is related to safety or reliability. Recommendations: From a Mazda dealer get the oil filter and thermostat, from your local auto parts store get NGK spark plugs, Castrol GTX motor oil (not synthetic), and some synthetic oil (Royal Purple, Red Line, Amsoil, etc.) for the transmission and differential, and from your local grocery store get the distilled water for the radiator. The factory service manual has all of the specifications. See the FAQ on this forum for the online service manual links, or you can buy a loose-leaf copy if you intend to work on your car a lot. The Haynes manual is also good, but Chilton is not.

After all that, then this is a good list for performance modifcations:

Solo autocross with your local SCCA will help with that.
