missing side seal

i have a 87 turbo engine that i suspected had blown apex seal. i pulled the engine and did a inspection through the ports to see if i could see any cracked seals and to check the condition of the housings.
as i spun the front rotor around i noticed through the intake port that there is a side seal missing.

my question is has anyone ever seen a rotary spit out a side seal?
the motor turns over smooth and i didn't see any evidence of damage to the turbo or the housings.

the motor looks like its an original mazda engine that has never been apart.

Could have been installed too tight and cracked to pieces.
