might buy an 88 convertible
hi everyone, i found a 88 convertible with a 5 speed for sale with 37000 miles for 6000 and im going to go check it out on monday. My dad has a first gen rx7 that ive driven and played with so i already know a little bit more about these cars then your average person. I just dont know much at all by comparison to the people on these boards so i was hoping i could get a little advice.
What are things that i should look for/be cautious about with this vehicle? Is the price they are asking fair (blue book said negotiations should start at 5, 100)? Does anyone know of any shops in the Ann Arbor MI area (where the car is located) that would be well qualified to check out the car for me before i purchase?
Thanks in advance. Any answers are greatly appreciated

wish i could find a vert with 37k on it? mine has 86k on it wich is low but i cant believe you found one with only 37k. thats like 2000 miles per year, it must be in nice shape. one of the things i would want to know is how they stored it, a car that old with that low of miles that was not stored properly could just be full of sludge and mouse poop, eaten wires, lots of other stuff.

That is real pricey for an 88 vert, especially if it is stock. I have no idea of the condition though so that is your call.
Things to look for in the verts are tears in the top obviously, especially behind the door sill where it retracts.
Weatherstripping between the targa top and softtop. Inspect weatherstripping between door window and top as this is prone to leaking and probobably does. You can also feel the carpet behind seats to see if it is wet to check for leaks if it has rained recently.
Make sure the top operates smoothly and does not stutter or make any unusual noises.
Check to see if the spare tire cover still has all 6 screw downs working properly as many people break these.

yeah it is kinda pricey, its about 800 over blue book (which i plan on showing them and asking for something better) but with only 37000 on it i thought it might be worth it.
thanks for the advice, i will def check those things out
