In the middle of a clutch job....

Well kinda. Im replacing the release bearing because its been whining like crazy 3, 4, 5. Mainly in 4th.
So I have a new bearing im swaping in, but I cant see anything wrong with this one I removed.

I also have a new pilot bearing and driveshaft, but how the hell do I replace the pilot bearing?

This is real fun feeling like crap and doing this .

go rent the pilot bearing pulling from a shop(checker/Napa,etc). It's a bitch to remove without it.

Pilot bearing puller is the way to go. Don't be surprised if the inner race and bearings come out while the outer race remains in the shaft when you try to remove it. Got to expand the jaws very tightly against the shaft.

if it's whining only in a particular gear, with the clutch pedal out, it's not the release/ throwout bearing anyway...check the tranny bearing(s) & fluid/ level

You could always take a bunch of grease and load it up then take a dowl that is just small enought to get in there and take a hammer...hit it as hard as you can...bam you get the pilot bearing out..but whatch out you might get a lil greasy when that thing explodes...

Yeah, your whining noise is the trans input shaft bearing...needs a rebuild or replacement. Most of the NA transmissions do this, and many of the t2 ones.

You pretty much need a pilot bearing removal tool to do that swap.

Well I hate to say thats wrong but.....

I replaced the throughout bearing and driveshaft, along with the crossmemeber and mounts. I also used all locking washers and new bolts.

Its like driving A NEW CAR. No vibration. No sounds.

I was about a qt low on gear oil..... the spedo shaft was leakin like a civ!

Well, yeah...it helps to have friggen fluid in those things, you know.

IN general my comments make certain assumptions, and in this case those assumptions were that proper quality and quanitity of fluid was in the trans in question.

I guess it's true what they say...when you assume, you make an *** out of u and me. Oh well, good to hear you got it straightened out. The majority, however, do make whining noise in neutral with the clutch out, and to a lesser extent under accel/decel in lower gears. This is normally the input shaft bearings.

I was rather lucky it wasent the pilot bearing, because no one here in bumb**** no where has one .
But I was almost positive it was the parts I replaced.
