miata swap:blog:its a girl thing

so. i got my miata trani today. a 92. with about 100k miles on it.

i have a new s4 trani going up in my car. my old trani's bearings are out.

so i'll just have a good shell, so i am swapping out internals
rx7chick. the other one. she is the first girl to do it. first person on the forum to do it i guess. well i'll be doing it now.

she's going to guid me. i already have a shop to machene the shaft. and my auto shop teacher to teach me how to put things in and teach me how.

i will be blogging about it here

I think the main advantage is in the shorter gearing/gear ratios.

The earlier boxes (90-93) were built rather weak.I saw a lot of those boxes die on track events locally and helped replace at least 8. Haven't seen as much with the later models though.

sonikrat is right.

miata trannies are weak. i'm not sure why someone would want one in their car.

maybe it really is a girl thing... ?

the gears are wider aent they..

the miata 1st gear is like a 3.1 were the rx7 is a 3.4 or something... so wouldnt the miata box increase top end and lower acceleration...everyone says the gears are shorter but isnt it if the number is higher its shorter and lower its wider???

im trying to clearify this as im getting confused by what i always went on and what everyone seems to be saying....

What about for a daily driver? It's alot easier finding a Miata tranny with less than 50k than a 7 tranny with less than 100k.

Also, to clarify, only the 90-93 fit up (with work)?

the miata trannys are pretty much all interchangeable... in a miata anyway. but this really only applies to shaft size, bellhousing bolt pattern, tranny length type things. the internals are likely to be different. i dont know much about swapping a miata tranny into an rx-7 but if all that is being swapped is the tranny internals then it could become an issue.

as far as i know.....91 to 97 will all work (interchangable to the FC casing with modded input shaft)...the 94+ years minor changes were added since the engine increased .2 liter...the 94+ models received double cone syncros for second and third gear.... i believe

It might be easier to find a miata tranny with less miles, but that doesn't exactly get it in your car. You have to pay someone to tear your internals out and put the miata ones in and modify it as well, not exactly cheap!

I'd rather a T56 myself, but I'm just spoiled.

cmon guys give her support ... not cause shes a girl but cause shes a car tuner, thats the only thing that really matters here

good luck with the swap, im not sure about the strength of a miata tranny but they do have a very positive feel. I have to admit a miata is alot of fun to drive, everything feels so connected to you... even if its a girl car *piff*

The simple trick to not breaking trannys & diff mounts is to stay away from oversize grippy tires.

If you stay with inexpensive 205's, the tires will spin before the tranny breaks.

^ and 4 puck clutches. I learned that the hard way.

The Miata tranny would probably be for road racing (i.e. track) anyway. I wouldn't worry about it breaking.
