i just did this and mines really tight in 3 and 4...hopefully loosens up soon...it also rattles above 6500 but its not really noticeable cuz i drive with one hand on the wheel and one on the stick 99% of the time...other than that its really percise and once these bushings break in imma love it...

I put a miata short shifter in not too long ago and I'm wondering how to attach the top of the shift boot to the stick so it doesn't fall down. The jam nut that originally held the boot up no longer fits. I don't have a boot that ties at the top and I don't really want to get one. Any suggestions?

I would, cause they arent that expensive and i thought i would be able to get by with just buying the one that it says to buy in the writeup but i was wrong. It doesnt work right if both bushings arent good.

I just installed mine and used the bottom bushing ..as a top bushing ..I had a small sand job to do..to make it fit as a top bushing,so it would lie flat ..before you put the top ring on ..But It worked..it will squeak you by til you get a new one..if you wanted to "test " that puppy!..I like mine!..(click.click!!..)

yeah, thats actually what i did. I did some fabricating and made mine work for now, but its way too tight. My other bushing should be here tomorrow though, so hopefully it will work better when i get the right parts in there!

Hey, I have a question, in the write up Karack says "remove as much of the gear oil as possible and refill it so that the level of lubricant is half way up the shifter slide bore". Well my question is what oil do you use to fill it back up?

Sorry for the newb question.

thanks

Nevermind I looked it up on mazdatrix. They said to use 90w trans/diff oil.

"After cleaning the shifter hole, this is a good time to put the oil in the shift tower. We use 90W trans/diff oil. Fill to ABOVE the shift rod you can see down in the tower."

by the way, i am refering to that clip thingy that is going across the bore, and what appears to be a bushing of some sort (the orange thing). it is an S4 transmission...at least, i am pretty sure it is an S4 tranny.

so no one knows anything about that clip and bushing?
i am assuming that i need to take that bushing out, but i that clip is holding it and i don't want to screw around with it until i know what it is, and how to properly deal with it.

you can buy any of the ones that look like the one in the write-up. I chose the miata shifter instead of the RX-7 one because it was wayy cheaper.
