Miata short shifter on 87.

I was told that the miata short shifter will fit on the FC. If so, what year miata? The miata short shift kit is much cheaper than the FC kit, so I was thinking about it...

You'd be lookin for something along this line of shifter http://cgi.ebay.ca/Mazda-RX7-FC3S-86...QQcmdZViewItem Search though, you could most likely get one cheaper.

That is the same one that I am running. A little bit of sanding on the plastic bushing and you will be in business.

I have one in my 87; I think I paid $30-$35 shipped from eBay. I sanded the small socket bushing and made a new nylon upper cup bushing. I remade the plastic piece on the side of the large ball that fits the pin in the collar. I made it from nylon, a piece of cake. My shifter is as tight and as smooth as any new performance shifter, smooth and crisp.

I have one and i really like it. It does rattle a little, but its worth it in my oppinion. I also had to sand the nylon bushing down a little, and i had to make some really thick washers (or you could make a thick spacer) to raise it up a little, because the ball at the bottom was scraping at the bottom. Also if your stock shifter is sloppy, like most of them seem to be, it would be a good idea to get some new shifter bushings from mazda (they are cheap). It will make a world of difference if yours are broken and/or missing like mine were.

Also since you have a S4, your stock shift **** won't fit on the miata shifter because the thread diameter is smaller. Look for a shift **** for a S5, miata (obviously), FD, or RX-8. Any of those will fit.

what i did ws went to a junk yard and actually got a shifter out of a miata. my friend got a short shift kit and mine is just as short and i only paid 7 dollars for mine. i was lucky and all of the bushings were in good condition. if you want to keep the stock ****, i like it so i did, just put a layer of electrical tape around the threads. it dosnt really move and keeps the **** from coming off.

I am just wondering if all the miata shifters are as good as the next.. I saw the write up, just trying to go cheap.

Also thanks for the shifter *** comment. I actually am getting an S5 Vert for free as a parts car. It actually still runs I think, they just wanna get rid of it.

Be sure and get the extra ball-bushing, you'll need one on top and one on the bottom of the main ball. Make sure the shifter comes with the small bottom plastic cup bushing; I've seen some that didn't.

I bought new bushings from Mazda (again, they are pretty cheap) and the shifter will come with some. Im not sure if the ones that come with the shifter are the right ones or not. Im glad i had extras though because I had to sand one of them down and make a spacer out of it. I havent read about anyone else having to do that, but it just wasn't fitting right so i had to make some spacers and washers and stuff.

So to answer your question, i guess i dont really know if you have to have new bushings or if the ones that come with the shifter will work.
