metering oil pump question

Does the s4 turbo metering oil pump depend on anything other than the linkage to the throttle body? (ie. vacuum, electrical, etc)

No electrical. No vacuum for the omp.

One thing it does depend on is the approx 1/16 oil supply hole in the front cover that feeds the omp oil. If someone puts a front cover on using RTV instead of the front cover gasket, they might cover up that feed hold. That would mean no oil feed to the supply the omp.

That small hole is in the top left of the cover as you look fwd. The passage travels downwards in the cover, then to the right side of the cover and feeds the omp drive gear. The oil for the omp travels down the shaft of the drive gear to the intake passage of the omp itself. Most of the pressure from that small passage gets bleed off thru a split pin holding the omp drive gear in place.

Some of that might make sense. It helps to have a front cover in your hand when reading the above.

thanks for your reply,

so even with vacuum hoses and various electrical connections disconnected from the engine, during cranking with wot the maximum amount of oil (under those conditions) should be flowing into the engine?

Just in case: The omp does not lubricate the engines bearings nor the turbo bearings. That is done by the engine oil pump under the front cover. Has nothing to do with the omp.

The omp is mounted on the outside of the front cover and feeds oil to four oil nozzles located on the upper side of the engine. Two on the rotor housings and two on the intake manifold. It sprays a miniscule amount of oit into the rotor chambers when the engine is runniing, to lubricate the apex seals.

When cranking the engine over with the starter, the omp probably isn't injecting much of anything into the rotor housings or intake manifold.

Go to this site and download/read the LUBRICATION section or go to the online FSM and read the lubrication section there.
