Metallic Squeaking at Front

Been having some grinding when I shift into first gear. The shift **** is very loose and twists when I shift.

In any event, I've recently started hearing some metallic sounding squeaking/grinding sounds when the car moves from first gear. No sounds from any of the other gears.

Is this sound my tranny, and if so, what part of the tranny or is this the engine itself.

By way of clarification, the sound is like when the belts are squeaking on old cars, but there is more of a metallic sound to it.

TIA.

Jack up the rear and make certain it's stable. Start car and put into first gear, let out the clutch, while you or someone while underneath, listens for the sound.

A pilot bearingg would only "scream" when the clutch pedal is pushed eg. Clutch disengaged.
