I thought you had an FC though? I don't know of any auto trannys that AREN'T controlled by the ECU. I'm not sure about the FDs though. I know that FC automatics are controlled by the ECU, and that's why an auto ECU is necessary.

Superchips tried to make an NA chip and couldn't get decent results. When MD went on hiatus, people tried Superchips and they told them to try MD.

The Jacobs Box should be the VERY last thing you buy. The stock ignition of capable of putting 340hp (in a TII) to the rear wheels without faltering. I bought one of the first Jacobs boxes and sent it back after 2 weeks. I was very disappointed in the results. There wasn't any notable gain in 30-80mph 3rd gear acceleration tests (I did it a lot).

Good. I heard they charge an arm and a leg for the system anyway. Just to throw another question in here....How much power can an FD fule pump handle? I can get one for dirt cheap in great shape. Thanks people. BTW, how hard would it be to swap a 13B into a Miata?

So with this chip you don't need a whole new ECU, right??

You send the whole ECU to MD Racing. Once they get it, they desolder the chip that is in there then they solder a scoket in there so you can pull the chip out if you want.
When they send it back to you, they send the old chip with it.

You ship them your ECU (unless you have a spare) and they remove/desolder the old ROM, copy it, then overlay their fuel/spark maps into the data, then write it out to a PROM. The old socket the ROM was removed from has an 'extender' soldered in so that you can swap between the stock ROM and MD PROM.

If you use FEDEX, you'll only be without your car for 2-3 days.

Your ECU comes back with the new PROM already installed and the stock ROM in a little box in case you decide to switch back.

So when ordering one, you would definately want to tell them what mods you have done, correct??? Like, I've got a Mindtrain header and presilencer, and I'm getting an RP50 cat back this week, so I'd want to tell them I had intake/header/exhaust, right??

If you don't want to wait, you can buy mine! It's an 88 TII ECU with a MD Racing chip already in it! $400. That way you would have a spare ECU.

Will the TII ECU effect anything on the N/A car though?? Sorry about the stupid questions, I'm new to the whole fuel map thing. So the programming of the chip is the same no matter what mods you have then???

Mods

I emailed them a little while back, and their responce was that their chips were optimized for cars with mild mods. I would guess this means up to about exhaust and intake. When superchips sell the same chip it costs more and comes with a manual boost controller (the cheap under the hood bleeder valve kind) because both chips include removal of the fuel cut, so it's probably good for up to 10 psi or so (my estimate)

everyone who's gotten one has had only good things to say about them, NAs or TII.

here is an excelent wrtite up of their NA chip

You can if you want to. He may change the maps a little to better exploit your mods. The maps will work well with any/all the basic mods.

I read somewhere that the 86-88 computer is not capable of modifying the timing... The 86-88 chip *ONLY* changed the fuel map, and that the +15/-5 for the timing was on the 89-91.. thoughts, anyone?

I just read their website, and the only thing that it says was different between the 86-88 and the 89-91 was that on the 86-88 it adjusts the rev limiter to 9000, and on the 89-91 it adjusts it to 9100. It didn't say anything about not adjusting the timing though.

Timing

On the review I posted from Dave Disney's web sight he puts the chip in his 1987 GXL, and notes that it does change the timing.

You have it backwards. The 86-88 ECU has just a few lines of code in them to control the fuel curve. You can easily change the timing in them.

If any of you need another ECU to send in for modification I've got one I was going to send in. I just bought a chipped ECU so I don't need this one anymore. $60 and you don't have to be without your car at all and you can save on shipping costs because you don't have to overnight it both ways. This is an 86-88 NA unit.

Does MD race reprogram your original ECU ro do you buy a completely new one? I thought they said that you send them yours but then someone that was selling theirs said that its a completely different ECU.

They reprogram yours, the guy that was selling his said "then you'd have an extra one" as in if I bought it, I'd have my original, and his upgraded one!!

You swap boxes if you're lazy and you have another box.

To swap chips, you have to open the box up. It takes a little more time, but is still easy to do.
