OK. So I took my sister to school (less than 2 miles from here) and that took up OVER a gallon of gas round-trip!

There is a strong fuel smell in the cabin... but no puddles on the ground under the car. I can see the PD and it is not faulty as i FIXED it over a year ago. I smelled out the tailpipes (yum ) and I dont smell fuel in teh exhaust.

so i'm pretty sure she's

1)NOT dumping fuel into the exhaust
2)NOT the PD
3)NO puddles of fuel on the ground

she dOES

1) have the fuel light on (but the guage works fine)
2) smell of fuel around the engine bay and in the cabin
3) consume uber excesssive fuel.

SO i'll take off the UIM and **** today and look around for leaks....

Anyone have any ideas before I dive in?

 

is there any sort of flourescent dye that can be added to gas? cuz we could drive her hard (tog et the gas smell) and then quickly go into a dark garage with blacklight and see where its being secreted...

 

Check all the lines, and around the fuel filter.

The thing about fuel is that it is at a relatively high pressure. When it leaks, it can spray all over the place, and not really puddle in any one place. Just look for any wetness on the car.

 

Check the pulsation dampner, or ya might be in for a blaze.(Sorry, just noticed ya said it isn't the PD!).

My fuel lines went, but before they started leaving pools of fuel all over the place (in my underground parking!) they got all kinda intermittently eaten with rust and crap, and you could pick up a bit of gas off them with yer finger/tongue/toe. It was worse towards the front of the car, like down under the driver's feet. I'd jack her up and take a peek.

Redoing the lines is not too tough, but it is a major pain. Use high-pressure, fuel injection specific hose, and the right hose clamps. I used some SS fuel line, too, for underneath.

P.S. Might not be a bad idea to pick up a fire extinguisher if you'll be doin' any driving.

 

the injector O-ring could be faulty also...i had a pretty massive leake and drove for 10 miles to school!!! got my car towed back home later that day.

Fuel evaporates pretty quickly so unless it is a huge leak it won't puddle under the car...

 

i remember...
my first car was an 85' dodge aries POS and i had a huge fule leak. At first i noticed i would have less gas then i had to begin with after i parked my car, then i noticed crappy gas mileage, lastly i noticed a big streem of gas following me everywhere i went when i looked in the rear view.
That was my first car, it was so much fun!

 

In my case one of the fuel lines that feed the secondary injectors went and caused a nice little fire under the UIM. I fixed that and less than a month later the PD starting leaking. (damn thing cost $150 from Mazda).

So we fixed it.... the lame factory clamps were too weak and so the tubes leaked (on top of the the rot0r housings).

So we bought new screwdriver-style clamps that should keep it from leaking at all. Seems to be fine .
