Manual Jspec S5 TII Shift Lever Difficult to Move

I would usually search for info on this, but the search feature on this site is not working very well right now. I just installed a manual S5 Jspec TII transmission in a convertible. I checked the action of the shift lever before installing the transmission, and I thought it seemed a little stiff, but figured maybe it just felt weird because the tranny was not actually in the car. Now that the engine and tranny are in the car, it is clear that something is wrong.

The shift lever does not move freely. I can get it into all gears, but its movement is very stiff. It is stiff in neutral from left to right, and it is stiff up and down from gear to gear. It is as if a large set of vice grips is on the shift tube pinching the shift rod. Or the feeling could be compared to a lever that has the retaining bolts tightened down too far. Or, it could be that the shift rod is bent.

Hmmm... a bent shift rod you say?... The transmission came on a pallet attached to a Jspec S5 TII. Also on the pallet was a rear sub-frame complete with differential, axles, brakes, etc. As I recall, the sub-frame was resting against the shift lever when the pallet arrived. I hope this did not cause the shift rod to bend.

Anyway, I will probably have to pull this tranny back out. I'm guessing that it is a shift rod or a shift tube problem. I just wonder if any one else has had this problem or if you guys have any suggestions.

Thanks,
Brian

Is it possible that the bushing might have frozen even with an "unbent" shift rod?
