Malfunctioning ACV symptoms

In my recent rummaging, I've found that the connector for the ACV on my S5 TII had melted.

I was hoping there were some symptoms that I could be looking for to indicate a malfunctioning ACV. The procedure in the FSM is complicated and I'd really just like to know if it's working or not. If not, I'll probably just rip the thing out.

For reference, here is the location of the connector, the BAC is on the left and the water pump outlet is on the right:

Thanks.

Well, the electrical connector is either for the split air solenoid valve, or the port air.

The actual ACV is not affected by any electrical wires.. as inside is two vacuum operated valves (activated by the switching solenoid, and the relief solenoid in the rat's nest (blue and gray plugs)).

The port air solenoid valve isn't used at all over 20K miles, and the split air solenoid is activated by the 5th/reverse switch. All it does is supply the cat with air in 5th gear.

There really wouldn't be any affects you'd notice.. except not passing emissions.

Does the ECU throw any codes at you? Should be either a code 31 or 32.

I checked the engine codes, it didn't give me any with the connector connected (heh) and it threw a 30 when I disconnected it.

30 seems to be the split air solenoid valve.

I need to get an emmisions check within the month, so if I'm not going to pass it'd be nice to know beforehand

Thanks.

If the electrical system fails for the split air solenoid, you could always remove the solenoid plunger and spring from the unit after wrenching it off of the ACV. As long as your switching solenoid valve is working out on your vac rack, you'll have your cat air.

I've got mine rigged up similar to this, I have cat air 100% of the time (but no cat, lol) to attempt to tame my noxious exhaust smells. Don't know if it does much good with the smell, but it does fuel some backfires at high revs

I guess I'll just assume that it works and worry about it when/if I fail the emmisions test. I don't have any idea how long it's been burnt up and I passed my last emmisions test, so I guess it's worth a try.

Oh well. Thanks.

Just make sure that the power wire, if exposed on the burnt connector, doesn't touch the engine or other ground points...
