Malfunction Light on

So today I hopped in my car, I turned it on, the Malfunction Light came on and it stayed on so I turned the car off went inside and checked what the manual says and it says that there's a problem somewhere in my engine electrical system. It has new belts and some new wires, I don't think they need replacing, does this happen to anybody else or is this something I should be worried about?

just popped the hood, and right below the oil cap and below the bracket the alternator mounts on, there is a wire (semi exposed) and other items (can't identify) that are COVERED in dirt/soot/black stuff.

Edit (got a picture):

It's not very easy to see (I just used the pic I took of the whole bay and circled the area), but I'm just guessing it could be a possible culprit.

Alright, thanks. Would you guys know anything about a boost guage getting stuck? It works sometimes when I go WOT on the freeway it kicks back in and jumps back up and starts working for the rest of the ride, but I'll start it up next time and the guage just goes up to full (top of it) and doesn't budge till I go WOT while moving.

Pull the error codes that are probably stored in the ECU. [See my previous post.] That may help you diagnose the boost gauge problem.
