Major Differences between S4 and S5 turbo

Well, I have a T04B hybrid S4 turbo, as well as a stock S5 turbo. I wanted to swap the S5 exhaust housing onto the S4 center section and larger compressor, to take advantage of the better S5 wastegate and manifold design. Well..for some reason that doesnt seem to be working, (explained HERE ) so I may just sell the S5 turbo and manifold and stick with the whole S4 unit. My question is, is the S4 wastegate and exhaust housing really all that inferior to the S5? If I were to weld on a larger wastegate flap, and port the hole much larger, could it flow was well as the S5 wastegate? Will I really be sacrificing alot by using the S4 manifold and housing over the S5? Thanks

I was of the understanding the early s4 turbo's needed either some variety of spacer, mild machining, or something to fit the s5 exhaust housing, but it would still work fine. later s4 turbo's bolt up just fine.

the s5 housing is certainly a lot nicer. No wastegate worries, more responsive, and does away with funny twin scroll actuators and plumbing.

Well, its a turbo from a 88T2, so can't get much later than that.. But I've been told by many that they should be directly swapable, but Im beginning to agree with this. Seems That there is some spacer needed to fit the S5 center section into the S4 compressor housing.. and some machining needed to make the S4 center section seat properly into the S5 exhaust housing.. but thats a different thread I guess.

As far as power-making abilities go...am I going to be hindered with the S4 manifold and exhaust housing?

s5 centre section?
the exhaust housing?
I had my workshop bolt the two together during a rebuild, so am not totally familia with it, but I know for a fact the s5 exhaust housing and manifold bolt up perfectly to a late s4 turbo. I suppose it's possible yours had bits of an earlier s4 turbo used on it though. I don't think top end power would be too different, though the s5 manifold looks like it has more capacity for flow. Biggest reason imho is the wastegate, and then the response.
