main pulley wobble, sudden.

Heard a noise while driving.drive 20mins til I could get off motor way. Main pulley is wobbling quite noticeably.I'm thinking thrust washer bearing but why would it fail so suddenly.question is it driveable to get home, a 40min drive.

+1, double check that the bolts are secure for the hub.

worst case you will need to remove the fan, shroud and all the belts and try to feel if there is any play in the shaft.

Ok so I think my helper (Yoohoo style belt) was slightly too small and put too much tension on the main pulley. Snapped two of the bolts for the pulley to hub and managed to slot the holes for the other two bolts. So it's new pulley and switch to twin alt. Pulley and belts or Gilmers.

You didn't have the pulley bolts tight enough. Over time they worked their way loose and snapped/slotted. You probably loosened them to fit your "yoohoo" belt because there is otherwise no tension adjustment and it is almost impossible to install them.

If possible, keep the pulley you have as the timing marks are known to vary from engine to engine / pulley to pulley.

I would say you're right.when I first attempted I tried loosening pulleys but now I can install fairly easily just by starting it then bumping it on with the starter.obviously didn't tighten them up enough.lesson learned the hard way.

One snapped bolt out then second one I managed to have the easy out snap off into it. Brilliant! Because they appear to be made of adamantium. On a side note, hunting down gilmers now. Does anyone know what the difference between s1-3 rx7 12a and early 13b pulleys and the s4/5s is? I see some Gilmers kits advertised as only for s1-3 FC3s and some advertised as suitable for s1-5 with the waterpump pulley needing milling to 17mm and the main pulley needing one hole slotting.

The water pump pulley holes will be different(shaft size) so that is why you should get the specific kit.
Also the s4/s5 alternator is 15 mm(?) shaft, where the FD is 17mm so that is again different in the kit.
If you do not get the right application then you are modifying it to fit.

s4 water pump snout is 15mm and s5 is 17mm.

the gilmer kit also won't address your borked main hub issue. it also has no timing marks so you need to transpose those to it from the original pulley.

i do sell timing matched hubs/pulleys for $35 plus shipping, but you do need to understand the issues associated with removing the front hub.

Yeah I know I'm still working on the stuck bolt. I'll get it eventually.
I imagine shipping to nz would be spendy but thanks and the issue being slipping torrington bearing and or timing issues?

Yeah that's what I figured. All kits in nz are sold 15mm water pump shaft hole on the proviso you get it milled out if necessary.

You know you can take those studs out of the water-pump and replace them with bolts right?
Make it look nice and neat.

Or pull the studs and leave the holes empty...you sure don't need eight bolts to hold the WP pulley on.
