main fuse wires

In my efforts to get my car to start i was checking the main fuse, i tried to pull it out and destroyed it. After destroying it i figured out the correct way to remove it, by removing the bolts on the sides of the fuse block and taking the wires off. Now i cant remember which wire went on which side of the fuse and i thought i had it right but when i reconnected my battery, after taking my starter off and putting it back on, the inline fuse on my battery positive wire popped instantly so im wondering if i have these two backwards on the main fuse. theres an all black wire and a black with white stripe.

Not too familiar with the S5 but there should be a solid Black wire running from the battery to the engine fuse box on the side of the fuse box which is closest to the battery. On the other side of the engine fuse box (farthest from the battery) there would be two B/W wires coming from the Main fuse. One of these wires runs to a connector near the fuse box which connects the B/W wire to a Black wire that runs to the ignition switch. The other B/W wire goes to the alternator. A multmeter set to continuity would identify which is which.

It shouldn't matter what side of the fuse it's on, it should work either way.

Are you sure you didn't mix up the positive and ground at the starter?

If you get the two black cables swapped in the wrong spot................that means you lose power to the bus bar that feeds the Retract, headlight, BTN, both EGI fuses if the MAIN fuse blows. And you also lose all batt power to the interior fuse box (those fuses on its batt bus).

If the MAIN fuse blows when the two black cables are where they are supposed to be.......then the Main fuse can blow but the bus bar will still feed the headlight, btn and EGI fuses (yeah, EGI fuses are of no use if the ignition switch loses power). Plus all the fuses on the interior battery bus will still be powered up.

That's the way I see it.
