main fuse. quick question

ok, well my last post wasnt getting me very far, so im going to try a new one. my main fuse is now blown. probably a newbie question, but is that fuse going to come out the same way the other ones did. ive been yanking on it and it wont come out. its now broken into a million pieces and i cant seem to get it out. im assuming this would be why the car isnt starting at all now, but what would cause this to blow in the process of a new alternator/battery?

wasnt the battery, but this alternator had another screw in it, which i assumed was the positive line of it, found out it wasnt, so i switched it to the one, put in another fuse and it worked. thanks.
