Look carefully at the attached jpg. Look at the elect jacks on the S4, S5 alternators in that jpg and tell us which jack looks like the one on your car.

I mention this 'cause you said something about one wire on the alt being on the bottom...............which indicated to me you might have a series four alternator which would NOT get fed from the EGI fuse (fuse on series five cars that has two wires).
