lubricating strut top bushings?

I replaced the struts on my '87 NA but didn't change out the top bushings ... now I'm getting squeaking noises, especially from the front when I turn the front wheels.

Is there any way to lubricate these top bushings? If so, with what? And how do I tell whether they need replacing? Car has approx 85k on it, bushings cosmetically appeared fine.

Thanks.

I tried this a few days ago. Jack up the car so the wheel is just off the floor. You don't need to remove the wheel. Then remove the nut on the top of the strut. Push the strut rod down as far as you can, and put something across the spring coils, so that it doesn't pop back up. I was then able to squish some grease in between the two plates where the strut rod hole is. Then put it back together. It didn't fix it 100% but its better now.
