LSD questions

Little help please...

I'm trying to establish a project plan for building a "Beefy NA", & figure the drive line is as good place to start as any. My base model 87 does NOT have an LSD. It still has 4 bolt hubs.

My question is, will I be able to find an LSD to fit my differential housing? I'm thinking it would be easier to slap in a rear end from a GTU or TII or something, IF I can find one. Two birds, one stone.

BUT, I'm just checking...

Search button helps alot, but i guess i can help.

What can be done is swapping out the whole diff with an LSD diff from a gtu or gxl.
I have an n/a s4 base with the 4-lug non LSD rear end and just finished doing the swap last week. The axle shafts fit, so it's not hard.

You cannot put the TII rear end in there because the axle shafts are longer.

If you need more help, just pm me.

You CAN swap the TII drive-train as a matter of fact. I did it for my TII swap. You must swap the TII LSD, TII CV halfshafts (axles or w/e), and TII driveshaft.

If you don't want to go with the TII stuff, I've got a S4 GXL LSD and CV halfshafts if you're interested.

Thx for input...

It's quite funny, I'm VERY familiar w/ message board etiquette & use search faciility... I've literally been trying to dupe the search function into an answer for 5 hours now. For my career, I'm a software engineer... so I get it. But out of any message board I've ever been to, this one far & away is the most abusive in regards to using the search function... Its just funny...

Anyway, thx for the knowledge.

The TII and NA diffs are different. The NA uses a 7" ring gear, the TII an 8". You can get a clutch type LSD from an S4 and rebuild it and install it, or get a Miata Torsen, or go aftermarket. I'd caution against just getting a stock LSD rear end and putting it right in. It's old and worn, so it won't be very functional.

How about rebuilding the clutch lsd, and shimming it? Anyone done that?

As strange as this may sound, go to www.miata.net and look for threads by "Father Leadfoot" or something to that effect, he's tried a bunch of shimmings and has reported various preloads, and performances.
