Low mileage but 14 years old???

Im buying a 90FC with only 70k on it. So tecknically its running perfect but what about the oil seals and water seals? After 14 years the car can have 1 mile on it but still blow up the next day right??? What should I think of a car with 70k on it with current good compression.

well you do have a point about seals and stuff being 14 yrs old. i bought my 91 coupe in 2000 with 90k on the engine and everything looked great under the hood but i guess by the time i got to about 120k the water seals were definitly going and i had to spend lots of money in 2001 to fix the intake manifolds, 5th and 6th ports were clogged shut, this was before i had the skills to really work on it.

so what im saying is that basicly i dont think there is a way to check all the internal stuff without taking down the engine. i guess just test drive the sucker and really wind the gears out and make sure no smoke is coming out the back, if you see white smoke i thnk that means the coolent seals are going and blue smoke would be oil seals. but any smoke out of the back is bad and most likely means something bad is going on inside the engine. but with 70k on the engine i bet its a good car, if it was maintained well you should have no problem getting to 120k without too much work. after 120k then things started going wrong on all my rx7s.

yeah, you can do the normal tests (see RX-7 FAQ thread) to see whether it's obviously leaking through some engine seals or whatnot...otherwise, it'll be tough to tell.

I'll tell ya...my car, I just bought back in September. A 1987 GXL. 51,500miles on it, and only 4,000miles on a new engine. The engine runs like a champ, but every bushing from the engine mounts to the shifter to the suspension is worn to all hell.

So I guess that just says that your concern is a valid one.
