Talking Low lights with 4 bulbs look here!!!!

I have had this car about 3 weeks and decided it was time to fab some cool lights since nobody sells these. The whole thing was not expensive to do and took a few nights of playing around with parts to get it right. BTW the pop ups DO work perfectly with the factory motors and DO NOT need some power cut rig of any sort.

Wadda ya think? The housing will be lexan on all sides when it`s through and will resemble the BMW 8 series pop-ups.

looks sweet, but im not too sure on how profesional looking you can get it if you did it yourself...just buy some that are out already, cant go wrong with them, something might go wrong with DIY ones...

Just another pic........

.......if your curious the lights are H3 foglights and when on high beam all 4 light up with some help from relays. no factory wires have to be cut, it is plug and play. Only one factory part has to be modified and it is now adjustable back to factory spec very easily if so desired.

John

P.S. I know the lexan looks cheesy but this is the first mock up of a cover/protector.

From what I have read NO ONE makes these for under $800 and not in the USA at all.

oh... well then GREAT JOB!! how about making a tutorial on it? hehe sorry i just dont like to buy "cheap" ****, especially when it comes to cars... but it looks good except the lexan haha, it would be AWSOME if you could somehow get a mold going on kinda like the stock ones but with 2 holes indented for the lights to be placed in...

He probably just replaced the arm that moves the lights up with a shorter arm. Therefore it only has that much lift...
Very simple design, and ussally the simplest designs work the best-

I agree that you should do a writeup on how to make it. Parts list etc

That looks really good mate!

Are they 100% water proof? How is the visibility?

I'd be very interested to see a DECENT writeup done, looks like a nice project for my semester break if you could knock us up a web page with detailed step-by-step.

driving, how good is the spread and distance on these? they look cool but it isn't going to matter if i knock the front off because i can't see.

OK OK OK< I just got back in town and will give explanations and MORE pics as soon as I put my daughter to bed, this can be done for under $100 and only modifies ONE factory component and WITHOUT wire rigging or relay mods. BTW a shorter swing arm will NOT work, I tried and all it does is jam the motor half down. I will show my design later tonight.

Stay tuned..................................

Everything melts, this is a work in progress, the lexan is the first mock up, if it melts which I thought it might, I will use a heat resistant plastic.

Exclamation Ok, here are some pics finally.......

This is a picture of the modified swing arm for the lift motor and the piece I cut out of it. The motor has to have a full length arm (stock length), to allow the motor to complete it`s cycle or it will jam, but we want a shorter arm so that it will only raise the light assembly half way when it goes up. My solution was to modify the existing arm so that it will slide into itself and be short when pushed up, and also slide back out when the motor is in the down position so that it can make it`s full travel and not bind up. The one that I made looks bad but works perfectly and since I retained the factory ends they work smoothly with the existing components. the only extra thing I want to do about pop-ups is make a new stop so that the wind cannot raise the assy. all the way when you are doing say 80 or so. So far I have driven around town and it never happenedbut I don`t want them to bounce up and rattle if I go over a speedbump either. These are fully adjustable by simply drilling a hole at the hiegt that you want and inserting a cotter pin as a stop. I also drilled another hole that lets me set them back at factory height so I can adjust the lights easier or if I want to put the old lights back in temporarily to get an inspection sticker. I think that when the casing is better, a person working at an inspection station will just assume that they are OEM unless he knows these cars well.

John

.......I know it looks like crap but trust me it is strong enough. The hot glue that you see on the ends is to hold on the little plastic sockets that snap onto the light/motor assy. rotating studs. I want to get an arm with nicer sockets and redo this a little neater looking.

My company was sending me out of town so I only had time to do one but the light seemed to work as good as the other factory one. What I need to do is drive it where there are no street lights and see how it looks.

P.S. This whole project has only cost me about $70 including the lights, metal, lexan, and shipping for the lights.

...........And one more thing, I just found some red/yellow lenses today that I am going to use to make my own S5 looking taillights out of S4 lights. If it goes the way I think it will look better in some ways than the way too expensive S5 lights.

Maybe I should build and sell light kits??????.......

.............Just kidding........... I will share the info and help more of us guys on a budget out.

BTW, does anyone have an old cracked S4 light to donate?

John
