Exclamation Lots of random Q's :-)

Hi there. My name is Justin and I have been an owner/lover of the RX for 6 months or so now. I have plenty of questions (not fully beginner questions) that I think all of the knowledgable minds on this website would be helpful towards! I will try and go back to checking this thread ever so often, but if you want to send me an email directly just so I can read it faster, my email address is: JQ23@hotmail.com.
Stats:
I have a 1991 Mazda RX-7. The front half (hood, bumper, not sure what else) is off an 87. I bought the car with the information that it had been in a front end collision. Anyway, I just have a couple random Q's that I would like opinions on...

I have HKS intake (came with it) but I have been advised to replace it *which I want to do*. Can I have cold air intake put on here, without a lot of cutting/molding etc? What air intake works best?
K, now for performance Q's.
I have a low budget... (couple hundred bucks at a time....) what shall I get to help make my RX faster/more fun/and more efficient? Give me orders of what I should have done... intake, exhaust, sway bars, accents, ecu... etc... I don't even know exactly what a ecu is, and I don't know what sway bars are for. (yes, you can laugh)
Finally- my engine has 152,000 miles on it. What is your opinion?? Rebuild/New Motor/ V-8? And which ever you suggest, maybe give links, or more info about? Because I've been thinking of saving up for a V-8, but how much should i spend on a motor? What brand of motor? And so forth.

Thank you for all of your replies/suggestions/advice in advance!!!!! And how can I put pictures on here.... I want to show you my RX. Thanks!

Justin Egli (Portland area, Oregon)

Hmm, it would seem you have a series 4.5 then? Is it turbo or NA ?
For Air filter i would suggest either a K&N panel or apexi if you have the extra $$, they are pretty easy to install.
Top priorities for performance modding is basically Air filter>exhaust>ecu. And there are other small bits that should be put on like upgraded ignition and spark plugs etc, someone else will give a better idea of this.
The ECU is basically the cars brain, it controls all of the major electronics, the fuel and air mixture and things like that.
152,000miles, get a compression test (with a rotary compression tester) and see what its like, it may last for a while, or it could be on its way out. If it is a turbo, i would opt for a rebuild and extend port while its apart. Most people on here will object to you putting a V8 in, as the heart of the rx7 lies in the rotary engine, and a v8 may upset the weight balance slightly. I would think it is just not worth it, when for the same cost you could rebuild with extend port and probably a hiflow turbo and still have cash left over.

bryanfc -sorry if some of this makes little sense.. still have hangover from last nite :P

why dont you take that couple hundred bucks to make your car reliable?

like cleaning injectors ( most of them get almost clogged and cause floooding )
flush and fill every fluid of the car
replace all filter ( for air filter, just get a power intake from Apexi, expensive a bit though... )
replace those worn and toasted vaccum line and maybe remove the rat's nest and emissions
maybe a newer and free'er flowing exhaust
compression test

that's pretty much all I think for the moment

V8 + or - threads (as well as any V8 technical fitment etc) and frankly any V8 questions such as cost, etc should be posted in the other engine conversions section (https://www.rx7club.com/other-engine-conversions-non-v-8-118/) of the board.

I would hope that the V8 zelots would avoid clogging up this thread and getting it shut down.

Its a N/A convertible. I got new spark plugs/wires..... and I have done some work on it- i got a new radiator (87') and whatnot. It has HKS on it, and I have aftermarked exhaust (don't know what kind) but the intake is letting a lot of dirt in.. and wanted to see what i could have it replaced professionally with... some guy offered I think it was... flowmaster? I don't know.. should I look for someone who can install Apexi? I've never heard of them.... I've heard of HKS and K&S.... thanks for replies... and won't discuss the engine until I guess I need to think about it... where can I get a compression test done?
