Lots of backfiring during cold starts on my new 7

OK, so I ended up buying a 1991 RX-7 N/A Coupe the other day.

It has 120K miles and is in pretty nice shape for being 15 years old. I had the oil changed yesterday and the Mazda techs said the car seemed to be mechanically sound.

It runs great after it is warmed up. However, when I crank it in the morning (and it's been in the 25 to 40 degree range here) it is hard to start and runs VERY rough for a minute or so. The smell of fuel is strong, and there is a lot of backfiring.

I've owned the car two days. What should I do to it just as preventative care? Should I tune it up? New wires? Iginition module? What do you guys recommend?

The first thing I do when I buy any car is a full tune-up. Plugs, wires, check the timing, replace the fuel filter and air filter, etc. It will make almost any car run better.

somthing that will make the car run real poorly when cold is the water thermo sensor, not hte one on the radiator, but the green conector on the back of the water pump housing

a tune up is a good idea also!!

A full tuneup should be the first thing on any new FC purchase. All fluids, plugs, wires, belts, hoses, TPS adjustment, etc etc. EVERYTHING. As mentioned previously, the water themo sender is a likely cause. If it's wildly off value then the ECUs fuel delivery will be effected.

Also, after you start the car it should idle at around 1500 RPM until it warms up. If that is not happening, then it will run poorly until warm. The 1500 RPM is set by the cold start cam and thermowax. These are covered in the Factory Service (FAQ) and Haynes manuals.
