lost title
Some areas are more lenient than others. IN general, this situation is not good for you. Unless theyre cool about it, you'd have to find the last person it was TITLED to, and have THEM apply for a lost title. THey must then wait for it to come (or print it out there in the courthouse depending on location and procedure) and sign THAT title over to you. I have been through this before.
IF theyre really relaxed about it, you might be able to explain it to them, let them pull up the title in the computer, print it, and give it to you...you might BS them and pretend to be the original owner, or you might just tell them the story and hope to get unbelieveably lucky that theyll just hand it over to you anyway. You can then take it home, sign the sellers name and your name, and return later to register it.
