Loss of power on S4 N/A

alright ive been driving my car like this for about 3 weeks and its finaly annoyed me enough to write a thread about it to ask for help fixing it. my car seems to run perfectly fine except for the loss of acceleration which has seriously made my slow car a lot slower. I have a 88 vert and i was wondering what i should check first?
i dont have a compression tester but my friend does, do i need an adapter for my engine or will his tester work fine on it. another thing i did is replace my stock air box with a k&n cone filter but i havent heat sheilded it or anything would that be affecting my acceleration? Anything else that i should check cant think of anything else.

What exactly does it do, just poor acceleration, or does it seem to accel up to a certain point and bog down? Give us some more details

Run it for a while rather hard, then check the cat and see if it glows at all, also, does the exhaust sort of burn your eyes at all? If it's original exhaust it may be clogged, perhaps you may want to run some injector cleaner through it as well.

No the exhaust doesnt burn my eyes, and i just took my car out and ran her real hard nothing unusal my cat wasnt glowing or anything. My temp gauge went up higher then ive usually seen it when i run it hard though, it ususally always stays toward the middle but it went up to about 3/4 when i ran it hard this time. I heard that injector cleaner really doesnt work at all maybe im wrong though.

My car did the same thing when my cat plugged up. The temp gauge would run at about 3/4 unless I turned the heater on full blast and run like that in the 88-90 degree temps we had.

I couldn't accelerate for **** and when I tried, it hit a wall at 4k rpm

It probably Is your cat. Although I've already suggested that.

Is that a picture of you on your avatar?

youve hit a wall at 4k.. that would be the biggest problem in most of our cars.. do a search for "hesitation" or "3700 stumble" that should fix your prob..

and the aux intakes on an N/A are thought to contribute to the hesitation. Several articles I've read theorize that the ecu can't supply a stable ground to both the actuator(s) and the secondary injectors, and since they both come on at about the same time, hesitation occurs. I've no idea whether this is a valid assesment though.

S4's 6-port actuators work on back-pressure from the cat - not electrical. You must be thinking of the S5 motor where the ports are EUC controlled....

Anyhow, back to the original problem - check the 5th and 6th ports and make sure they are moving, If they move easily by hand then check the hose from the cat to make sure it's still hooked up Then check the main cat itself. You can do a Home Despot mod to make sure the ports are opening.

Coincidently my provided suggestion Is the same one I suggested on a previous post. Check to see If your Leading Coil Wire and Ignitor Is firing. Mine failed and I couldn't accelerate for ****. Does the poor acceleration accomadate with a ticking sound or what may sound like an exhaust leak at the Manifold?

Well problem solved guys, it ended up that my second precat was clogged with all the crap from the first precat because my first precat was hollow when i took it off. Anyways i ended up gutting all my cats and now i have a loud stinky rx-7 which i dont mind at all, it smells like i just finished riding a snowmachine. And Best of all my power has been restored along with a couple of extra horses.
Thanks guys
Tom

Can you just use a inductive timing light to test a coil, or is it that they just fire a lower current after a while? just a question while reading thread.
