Looking to upgrade the turbo

Hey,

Looking to upgrade the stock turbo on my S4 TII. Since the stock one blew its seals. The car is bone stock now.

Here is what I am planing to do before I upgrade the turbo. Please critique , add on.

Intake

3 in. Turboback

Rtek 1.7

550 main , 720 secondaries

Walbro

MBC

FMIC

Upgrade to a Koyo and new hoses

Basically what I need know is I guess a new mani , was thinking about either the ssautocrap or the hks one and a new turbo , been thinking of something from the Garrett family , GT35ish. The engine isnt ported and I dont want to go too big , so when would I expect full spool with something like a GT35 or a GT40. Prefer not to go ballbearing because of the cost issue.

Thanks,
Ark

You should really consider doing an engine rebuild with the upgrade too, or atleast plan for one to come in the near future. boosting too much on an old worn out engine might not last too long.

I'd recommend a standalone, but it can be done with the Rtek 1.7/2.0:

This is actually for my friends car. The car itself has 190k on it but the engine and turbo were replaced 55k ago. Regardless of that the friend has about 3-4k in the bank just for the purpose of if and when it poops.

I guess shooting for around 300whp for now. Biggest thing is reliabilty , other than internal engine work which will come when it blows. What can be done to insure the rest works right.

We are doing spark plugs , new plug wires , new fuel filter this weekend along with new Mazdaspeed mounts and replacing all the vac. hoses with the HoseTechniques kit.

As far as gauges go , boost obviously and a wide band when exhaust is bought. What else though ?

As far as EMS , I know its needed and ofcourse Rtek compared to EMS is a huge leap. How far can we push the car reliably with just Rtek. I mean as long as lets say we can do 250whp with rtek and just run lets say 7psi on something fairly decent like a GT35 then thats fine. Because if and when he upgrades to standalone he actually has room to play with.

Oil temp/ EGT

250rwhp and the Rtek @ 7psi should be just fine.

Isn't there a chance that if you put that nice new turbo on a motor that you kinda expect to blow, you could have some debris(apex seals) fly though and destroy the turbine of the new turbo?

What turbos should we be looking at? Lets say good spool and able to do anywhere from 230whp to about 350whp.

anything with the GT35R compressor wheel. T04... T-61 might interest you. A guy I know was hitting full boost (17psi) around 4000 rpm. And don't forget an aftermarket wastegate... your stock one will not work. Tial 42-44 mm will work great. Might also consider an aftermarket fuel pressure regulator and stand alone EMS... I agree to rebuild first.

To4E 57 trim
Divided .84 housing, P trim

Coupled with a good manifold, exhaust system, and tuning that will spool very very fast...

How much do you have to spend? With what you listed so far I'd stick with a hybrid and be cheap.

HKS TO4E is what im shooting for, but if you wanna be cheap, get a BNR Stage 1 Hybrid. You'll be around 300hp at around 14 psi and it looks stock and is a sleeper and wil also fool the cops.

When did the cops start caring about your turbo? Am I missing something?

Money isnt exactly an issue , it just has to be done right and be reliable. Basically nothing crazy and out of this world but nothing cutting corners cheap either.

Then go will a full upgrade.

Get an HKS or Greddy Manifold with a T4 flange and then you're set.

You can buy something smaller for now and always have room to grow, or just go with a BB GT35 and be done with it......

As far as hybrid's go I certainly would NOT call them "cutting corners" cheap, but there is no doubt that a full upgrade will far out perform a hybrid at lower boost levels as well as out last a hybrid by a long shot
