Looking to buy an FC

Hi all! First post here, and hoping you can help me out.

As the title says, i am looking to buy an 88 FC-RX7 as my first car. Now i need to know what kind of yearly maintence costs i can expect, any common problems that tend to go on these cars (the one im looking at has 180,000KMS on it).

Also the car im looking at seems to smoke a bit on start up (for 5-10mins) is this a problem? Should i be worried about it?

One more thing, I dont really like the gauges that came in the FC, is it possible to do a gauge swap with and FD?

Thanks again!

There are more gauges on a FC than a FD... using a FD cluster would be a step down in information provided to the driver.

I find those old school gauges quite saxy! (They don't make them like they used too...) But hey it's your car so it's your call.

It would be easier to "fix up" the stock cluster. There is a kit available on ebay to add a blue backlight "indiglo" type look to the guages. You can also get brushed aluminum or carbon fiber trim pieces to go around them.

Personally, I like the stock guages. They're easy to read, and red is the best color for not impairing your night vision (or so I've heard). I'll I've done is to add an LED by my tach for my radar detector

Here are some links to give you an idea of what I'm talking about:

I have no affiliation with these sellers, and don't have any of these items. Just trying to be helpful.

I thought I would hate the guages too but you'll learn to like em especially if you have white face guages.Welcome to the Club.

Thanks for all the help guys! The gauge dress up looks like a good idea, although i may just remove the whole mess and buy individual aftermarket gauges and stuff them in the place where the stock ones used to be. Does anyone know of a company that makes aftermarket speedos (with KPH on them?)

Also: More importantly: I havent bought the car yet, does anyone know of a good RX-7 Mechanic in Vancouver who could check this car mechanically for me?

smoking for 5-10 mins on startup is bad. The car should only smoke for 30-40 seconds, max.

i'm also looking to buy an N/A 2nd gen rx7. dunno the miles (im calling the guy tommarow about it).

here is a link to the car on autotrader. NA rx7

it looks nice, the mods it has are pretty decent. i'd change a few things personally (like the brakes, get some brembo's) and front and rear strut tower braces. and um, i dunno why he lists sabelt as a mod. aren't those driving shoes?

what things should i look for? i have a friend who is REALLY knowledgable about rx7's and he says the FC NA ones last forever (he's heard of some lasting over 300,000 miles!). thats always good. i'd like a turbo, but i cant afford maintaining it. thnx for your help

TRW sabelt makes seatblets, as well as driving suits (ferrari's f1 team uses them, with the exception of M Schumacher), shoes, and gloves. Essentially, they are a racing safety equptment company.
