I've owned my vert for close to 18 years. I see no reason it cannot be a primary dd vehicle. It holds up as well or better than any other car.

Coupes are better for that? Why do you say that?

According to the FAQ and Mazda, the lightest FC Coupe ever made was the 1986 N/A at 2625 lbs. The heaviest N/A coupe was 1990 GXL at 2881 lbs. with the '90 turbo at 2981 lbs.

The 'Vert ranges from 3003 lbs. in 1988 to 3071 in 1991.

So, if we cherry pick among the specs, the math says 446 lbs from the lightest coupe ever made to the heaviest convertible of all times.

That is the maximum difference. Although it is a lot, it is not 800 lbs.

Keep in mind, this extreme example is from S4 to S5, so there is quite a difference in HP and TQ numbers between these two examples.

If we take the same year production so we have the same HP and TQ, the difference is as follows:

1988 3003-2720= 283#
1989 3045-2881= 164#
1990 3045-2881= 164#
1991 3071-2787= 284#

My personal theory is that Vert drivers are able to offset some of the weight difference by attracting thinner women than coupe drivers.

BTW, I had this same '800lb' quoted to me by a customer service guy from a well known Mazda aftermaket specialty firm.
That 800# was the reason that I couldn't use my eibach springs on my vert. He told me that the tires would rub and
the suspension would bottom constantly. To avoid this impending disaster, I needed to only buy the 'vert RB springs from him.
When I asked him (email) where he got the 800 lb. number because the factory specs didn't agree, he didn't answer.

Those eibachs are still the best upgrade I have yet made on my 90 Vert. Yet.

Hey Preacher, you have some dynamite cars, but you spread misinformation. Twice on this thread alone. Once on the compression tester,
dissing anyone that doesn't use a Mazda compression tester and once on the weight issue.

Preacher, if you want to tell me that Mazda is wrong and you are right, then I don't know what else to say.

I am going for a drive right now. 45* in DFW, sunshine. Top down, heater blasting. Ahhh... Every drive in the vert is a mini-vacation.
If you take into consideration that a vert is essentially a GXL (has all the luxury parts), then the difference betwwen a 1990 GXL at 2881 and a 3003 lbs. 1988 (Assuming this weight is true for the fully loaded vert) then, you are looking at a difference of 122 lbs? Not much at all.

i unno nearly as much as you guys, but sinse everyone seems to be throwing their 2 cents in heres mine.... i think having or not having a vert is mere personal preferance. I have a hardtop, i love it, i wouldnt own nething else... that doesnt mean i have to bash the vert... both have their own unique up sides as well as downsides, its up to the driver to decern for himself wuts important and wuts not....

Okay well heres my 2 cents too. I have owned 5 fc's and 2 of them have been verts. I will say that the comparisons regarding speed are not much off the mark. Okay its really simple logic, 1[ The vert ways 350 lbs more so naturally its a ''little slower''. [2 If you own any rx-7 automatic you are not buying the car for the sheer performance. So if you wanna buy a auto vert and spend way mounts of money doing a t2 swap go head. But it sounds like to me that you are not very knowlegable on fc's to begin with so you might wanna stick to something more simplistic. If i knew where you lived I would offer you a 91 brave blue vert that needs a rebuild and a new top. And its a 5spd. For less than what you are paying for a car that your gonna sink godlike amounts of money into. I know, shameless plug......lol

But seriously, some of you guys saying that the vert is not a good daily driver and not to buy a vert because its a ''dog''. C'mon get real. Verts are a blast to drive and they still hold up in style next to the more modern common verts for example, Miata, Mustang, etc.

FC'S ARE A BLAST TO DRIVE PERIOD! But if your looking to be all fnf do not get a automatic.

Thumbs up I love my vert also...

I have a 1988 Vert,,, her name is Jezebel and she is black and beautiful... In Miami we generally have great weather... but putting the top down and listening to the street port purr... Man what a feeling... I dont get good gas mileage with the wide wheel and tires 18"x11" rear Fittipaldis and 18"x9" up front and meaty rubber at 275-35-18 and 235-40-18 ..

My motor is a mild street port but it gets plenty of response from the 45mm Weber Sidedraft carb at barely 190 hp and I am getting about 10 MPG's.

Jezebel is getting a new motor.. 512 HP , T-70 single turbo.. I make my own Vertical Door Kits... I love my vert. So now i have two of them.. both 88's

i currently own a auto vert that i have for sale.i have never been beaten by any suv and i can tight with my friend's pristine legend gs all day long on the freeway.not that his car is a sports car but he is pushing 230 hp and it boogies.sure my vert is slower than a coupe or a 5speed vert but my racining beat true dual exhaust and other goodies give it that extra uphhmm.plus nothing turns heads like a vert .i've owned many nice rides but nothing attracts attention or makes new friends like avert .buy it and if the the tranny goes do the 5 speed swap.i rebuit my auto tranny for 650 so it was a no brainer plus it was done rite .
