Looking at a 87 RX7
I am going to be looking at a '87 RX7 later today hopefully. Here's the ad:
1987 Mazda Rx7
Rare car!
Body decent, did run, but has been sitting for a year or so. All new tires. Light front end damage. Whole car for sale, $450 OBO
I wasn't really looking for a car, but have always liked the looks of the second gen RX7's. I don't know anymore then what was in the ad, still waiting for a call back. She did send me a e-mail saying she would send me pictures. I figured if it wasn't a auto I would pick it up as long as the front end damage isn't too bad. Would be a fun winter project.
I read through the FAQ's and the "Buying a RX7 guide". The car I am guessing from the ad doesn't run now, or at least they haven't tried to start it. Any thing I should look for under the hood though for a sign of if I should even mess with it? Anything special I should do for first time startup after sitting for a while, other then some ATF down the plug holes first if I do pick it up? Thanks for any help. It would just be a fun car to drive, as my Cobalt is my DD. Thanks in advance.

Just bring a compression gauge and check the compression while your there. That will give you a good indication on the internals of the engine. Besides that, if the front end isnt too hammered, I would offer her $350 for it. You would be getting a pretty good deal!
The car will probably need alot of little **** done to it. These little things can add up and get pretty costly. make sure you nitpick a little and that will help get the price down. But be prepared to spend some money fixing up the car. RX7's can be costly to own.

hell yeah i agree with him little things can be a pain..pop the hood and check for any kind of oil any where..as far as the sitting then starting theres no real thing or things to do on first start up but....when you try to start it before give the gas pedal two taps then try to start it, and if it doesnt turn over dont sit there and crank it all day, crank a few times then stop then try to start it again...you have to let the rotors build compression by cranking it....i dont see why it wont start unless thats why the previous owner sold it....hmm but 450 clams is not bad at all espescially if it starts and checks out...cause thats how much i paid for my second gen....
good luck....
