Long drive in the FC tomorrow, anything i forgotten?
Alright so after many issues with this turbo kit im taking it to the supplier/rotary specialist that is 1600kms away (am also going down to see megadeth and slayer :rock:) The car is running fairly rich at the moment as its a bit out of tune so im taking a spare set of plugs incase by some chance they foul. My list of shit so far includes
Toolbox Zip Ties 100mph tape 12v lead light 5L Oil 5L Coolant 4L premix Fuses 20L jerry can (incase i cant find 98 octane when i need it) 4 B9EGV plugs So can you guys think of anything i should be taken? |
looks good except for the spare engine and spare transmission (j/k)

Fire extinguisher. I never go anywhere without it!

Oh i permenantly have a fire extinguisher and a fire blanket in the car. I also added jumper leads. I do have my jack and spare wheel in the car too, not one of these ppl that "save weight" by removing it lol.

list looks good mate, thats about what i had when i drove 1800kms home with my FC. i know it sounds a bit crazy but id take a spare SPARE set of plugs, i fouled up a set at a rest stop and just barely managed to get to the next town and bought new ones (who woulda thought an autoparts store would stock rotary plugs?) when i got home and pulled em out, they were already shitted up from running rich. Just a thought though. |

Today I made the round trip from Denver to Casper, Wy...600 miles. I prepared by stocking a Visa card and $100 cash. If your car is so sketchy that you need to pack a spare car as backup, perhaps you should consider the bus. |

There seems to be a particular skitzophrenia about rotaries around here... If someone mentions a V-8 swap to gain power and reliability, they get gang-jumped with cries of how excellent the rotary engine is and yet mention a long trip in one and the advice is to pack as though it's a Mars expedition. On one hand it's the world's most exotic and clever design, on the other, it shouldn't be trusted to make it to the corner gas station. Mazda built and marketed the RX as a luxury GT- the GT standing for "grand touring", BTW- and fully expected that folks would- and could- hop in a drive anywhere, anytime. Properly maintained, I don't see why that isn't still the case. |

The RX7 certainly didn't fit with GT characteristics upon release. It's almost always been considered a sport compact distinctly giving up luxury for performance.

This discussion shouldn't be the inherent reliability or the class in which the FC was intended to compete in the 1980's. In this case, we should assess the OP's actual risk and prepare accordingly. The OP has a modified car with a turbo kit that is trouble. He doesn't need extra lugnuts or spare radio antennas or most anything he is planning to take. His risk is directly related to the overall condition of the car (which only he knows) and the trouble being caused by the turbo kit. I think he should take: another set of plugs (8 plugs) , the gas (just so any crash will make the national news:rolleyes:) The fire extinguisher And I would advise the Aussie version of AAA for a free tow if the car breaks -jack |

The car made there and back without any real dramas (aside from one of the vac lines to the BOV melting but thats no issue) and as for the guy saying i shoulda taken plugs, i did. Car left with about 240hp came back with 415. And i had 100mph tape, its like the hardcore duct tape lol and yeah the stuff for my plugs were in my tool kit. Anyway the car was getting around 10 - 12L per 100km which is what my dad gets on the highway in his ls1 monaro, so i was stoked.
