lil help with my 88 tranny / driveshaft probleM?
Hello.
I recentely purchased a 88 rx7 se. The transmission seems to be bad there is alot of play when I try to shift into a gear, it seems like there is no track and I can't find the gear. Also when the car rolls it sounds like thunk thunk thunk. Makes me wonder if the driveshaft is bad. I did manage to get the car in gear or what i thought was gear and let the clutch off and nothing happened, the car should have shook and died. If anyone knows of any common problems with the driveshaft or the transmissions please let me know. im new to the rx7 scene but ive been modding dsms for years.
thanks,
Michael

Replacing shifter bushings is real easy. That should fix your loose shifter.

Sounds like its time to put it up on stands and check it out carefully. Look to see if u-joint is sloppy, or the bolts that connect the driveline flange to the diff yoke are loose. The clutch deal sounds like you may need a clutch too.
When I got my 88 n/a the bushings in the shifter were gone, and finding gears wasn't bad. New bushings can be done in an hour or so.
