The dash lights? or the Warning lights?

My warning lights only work when they want to...
Sorry I can't help, but I can relate. I am assuming you have bad soldering (or grounds)?

when my gauge cluster lights when out, i just got a simple on/off switch at radioshack and traced the cluster light power wires from the guage cluster lights to the switch off a haynes manual and put the switch under the steering column, it works.

Which Lights?..you will have to be more Specific. There is a Headlight Fuse and the Retractor Motor fuse,in the Engine bay,on that fuse block,Now the Gauge Fuses are Located under the Dash, driver's Side Kick Panel...Two fuses to Check there are Room Fuse and Meter fuse.Check those, then post your findings.
