They may make a lot of good decisions, but then there are some statements like these that have absolutely no factual basis and are basically prejudices, sometimes even invented in their own minds.

Yeah, pretty much. I know people that swear Harry Potter is Satanic..... The thing is, it actually teaches tons of good morals and life lessons if they could get around their damn closed-mindedness. I could go on and on, but thats the one that really bugs me.

Well the thing about Harry Potter is they mix witchcraft with life lessons. Personally, I'd rather have my kids watch something that doesn't need to mix the two or something similar, but the important thing is that they really understand what it is they're watching. I love horror movies just to see how creatively twisted people can be, and I don't go away from them thinking I'd like to rip someone's jaw off or actually watch things crawl out of thin air to take your soul.

On topic, RX-7's are very fun when maintained right. Just this weekend I finally made some significant breakthroughs on my car and I think I'm just about annoying coworkers because I can't keep my mouth shut about it. I'm so thrilled at how it's performing right now.

 

LOL, I know how that is. I have been in the process of rebuilding my engine for a while and finally got it running last week. I really try to keep from talking about it, but I'm not doing a very good job.

 

my first car was an rx-7 and my second and my third....


the first one i wrecked< and it was all my own stupid fault.

the sacond one a turbo tII i over boosted and blew.

the third a vert, while i got used to SLIDING in the LSD equiped rx-7 of before,
this one, just nose dives

how ever what stopped me from driving them was
1 blew up tranny
2 blew up motor
3 locked up motor
and they were never "offically" totaled out.

that being said save an rx-7 or 3, get a 240sx if u want a rear wheel drive, or just get a honda

dont get a 7 til u pay for it yourself( although i paid for all of mine)

never had a headlight fail, i am now on my 4th and 5th rx-7s

I don't think you should be on a quest to prove your dad wrong, specially if he's buying, just my 2 cents.

And I guess theres nothing wrong with an rx7 as your first car, just as long as your willing to read A LOT and spend your free time trying to get your car to idle correctly and fix flooding problems, etc. Good luck either way.

 

As far as i know mine are from the factory and ive never had a single problem with them.

 

My 88 vert was my first car (at 17), then I picked up an 87 TII, and things were great since many family members (including me) were mechanically inclined.

...until the vert's tranny needed to be rebuilt because the previous owner loved to dump the clutch at 7,000 RPM.

...and the TII blew a heater hose, dumped coolant and cracked the water jacket. This was replaced by not 1, but 2 JDM S5 motors which both broke an apex seal. The upside is I got the cash back for 1 of them due to the seller's "30 warranty," but still expensive as hell. Needless to say, the TII was sold to save me some headache.

So now, 6 years later, I am left with my vert, and it hasn't been cheap. But on the otherhand I can pretty much say that every major component is relatively new due to all the work I've put into it over the years. I wouldn't trade it for anything, so I can't say it's been a bad car to start with. If you're willing to stick it out, it's a hell of a fun car to own.

Just remember: the RX7 requires a commitment (and all your money), but in the process you will learn all you need to know about automotive repair .

 

If your dads got some money, hell why not get it and have him pay for anything that happens while you still live at home. I would fix my kids cars until their out of the house. If he's worried about the pop ups , I wouldn't mention the rotary engine. (common misconception about reliability)

Or if you want to do the ultra-responsible thing, you could do as mentioned before and get something cheap and save your poor dad some money.

Seriously though either a low mileage or recently rebuilt n/a FC would be a fine first car as long as you don't mind slapping down a bit extra for gas. Insurance really isn't that bad and it's a good learning car. N/As can be dead reliable as long as you don't beat the living **** out of it WHILE starving it of routine maintenance. My FC was and is my first vehicle and in the year and a half I've had it the biggest thing I had to do was replace the water pump. 140K and still running strong, in fact the rest of the car is deteriorating faster than the engine

 

i took out my flipup assembly because i'm building a race car. if that's all that's standing between you and an rx-7 of you're own..i'll send em to you for free, that way u can tell ur dad "look, i have spares".

headlights on flipups don't wear out any faster than normal lights. the flip up motors start 2 go or get sluggish so they go up at different speeds, but the lights still work. there's also a manual **** so u can leave them up manually if they fail.

these popups have probably the strongest motors ive ever seen....i once got a screwdriver stuck under one when i was working on the car.....it got stuck when i wanted to pop them up, i was scared shitless that i broke it, i put them down but that one wasnt going, so i wrenched the screwdriver out and all it did was finish going up then went back down with the other one.

been working perfect ever since...and that was 3 years ago.

also if you want the car bad enough, you just need to understand that there is alot of maintenace involved with a 20 year old car....if you up to it then go ahead....but if not i highly recomend getting a toyota corolla...my friend has a 98 stick, that thing kicks ***!!! he wooped a 300zx, a brand new honda civic, an accord, a mk 3 vdub, and a **** load of other cars with that thing....and hes still doing amazing on gas

 

The reason I would say no to a rx7 is not really a realiability problem with the car, it is a combination on a young inexperianced driver, in a car that is 20+ years old and is $$$ when it does break. Get a civic, prelude, g35..... something that is good on gas. hell a mustang or a camaro would be cheaper to maintain.

I just don't want to see you get a nice fc and wind up junking it when stuff breaks.

 

the headlight motors are freaking beast. mazda did testing on the plausability of flip up before production and tested not only strength but resistance to weather. they will open under water and at i think -60 degrees or below lower than the car will actually start.

now my fc is my first car. I have dumped more money into than anything else in my life, but I have learned so much from it that I think it is invaluble. If you want it go for it, but be ready to get stuck on the side of the road or catch rides every so often, it is 20 years old now.

 

maybe he ment that stock pop ups have **** poor light output when misaligned, which i wouldnt doubt on alot of average *for sale* rx7s.

a neglected car is a neglected car.. Find one that had a caring owner and you should be good.

Get an S5 N/A with a low mileage chassis (little over 100k) and a recent engine rebuild, should cost about $2500-3500. It will be too slow for you to kill yourself in and give you just enough problems to force you to learn about cars, which will save you a lot of money in the future. It really depends on what you want to do, RX-7s are addicting, do you want a car to just drive fast every once in a while in or do you want an old sports car to restore and possibly modify and get into road racing/autocrossing/drag racing in? If you're not that into cars it might be a better option to finance a newer car like an S2000.

And damn, I hate ignorant *** parents...
