Let's play "Name that Part"
My engine installation on my 88 NA has gone fairly smooth, except I've hit a few snags along the way.
There's a handful of stuff holding me back from getting this baby fired up and it's bothering the crap out of me. If you can help me figure out what goes where or if I'm missing something, much thanks are given. I'll have pics posted of the problem areas once I get the pictures back.
1. On the intake manifold, just to the left of the Mazda 13B Injection symbol theres 3 vacuum hoses in a verticle line. The bottom, smaller two have found a home, but the larger one up on top is still bothering me. What is this and where does the other end of the hose go?
2. On the passenger side of the engine, connected to the body is a lone hose that comes out of the big black cylinder thats near the antifreeze resevoir. Same question as #1.
3. The two air solenoids coming out of the airpump, where the crap do these go?
4. The random 4-slot female end wire coming out by the antifreeze resevoir
5. The green 3-slot female and the yellow 2-slot female near the stock air filter
6. The green-wired black 1-slot female near the alternator
7. The white 2 plug male, and the black 2 plug female just a little bit to the left of #6.
And that's all I can think of right now. I'm sure that I'll think of more, but for now that's all.
Sorry to bother you for your time, but I know that if I had taken the engine out, I would know all of these. But even if I only get one out of the way, I'll sleep better.

1. This is for the vauum spider for the oil injectors.
2. That is for the charcoal canistor and I cannot remember how that is hooked up, check your FSM vac diagram
3. Don't know of any air selenoids that are connected to the air pump, however I do know of two selenoids that are part of the air control valve. One of the selenoids is useless, the second one I believe controlls either the 6 port actuators or air that goes to the catalatic converter.
REted will correct me if im wrong of course.

5. TPS (green) and fuel pump (yellow) check connnectors.
6. Temp switch for optional auxiliary electric fan. No fan means no switch.

7 are the two connectors for the ACV's solenoids.
6 is stated above
5 is stated above
4 is probably for the cruise control.
3 is mis-stated. The airpump has no solenoids so we assume you mean the acv and I stated where they connect in no.7
2's description is too obscure. The black canister could be the charcoal canister OR the cruise control actuator.
1 is stated above BUT make sure the two small ones are not crossed up. Only one nipple is vacuum and the correct hose MUST go to that one....not the other nipple which is not a source of vacuum.

It's about 10 inchs long, is a single black wire with a grey-ish (maybe it was white?) single female end and on the other end is a gold colored sensor of some type. It has 4 threads and the lettering on the hard plastic boot a 0 and an X on it. What is this and where does both ends go?

It's currently in my hands. The car came with it in a bucket of parts to be put back in so I have no clue where its supposed to go. If someone could host a fairly large picture I could show you it.

Look in all of the spots that sensors go-
1) the rad temp switch, in the lower left hand corner of the rad
2) the dynamic chamber intake air temp sensor, on the left side, below the BAC valve
3) water thermo sensor, behind the alt, on the water pump housing
4) e-fan temp sensor, same area as above, but higher up the near the t-stat housing (gotta guess a little on this one, it's an option I don't have)
5) water temp sensor, left side of engine, below & forward of the oil filter
6) O2 sensor- that's a stretch...In the exhaust manifold
That's about all I can think of off the top of my head...

As already suggested by the esteemed Mr. Hailers, go to www.iluvmyrx7.com/2nd_gen_manuals.htm and download the EFI chapter of the Factory Service Manual (FSM) in PDF format for free. There are diagrams showing of all the engine's various components so you can identify them. It'll be a lot quicker (and more educational) than playing 20 questions here.

it looks like it goes on the bottom of the oil pan, but the sender seems too small... damnit.. i know this! can't be the knock sensor. can't be the water temp sensor.
edit, can it be the knock sensor? i dunno what they look like on S4's... and yes, it looks like a very short 02 sensor
another edit..thermosensor behind the waterpump?

It's a oil temp sensor for the SUB ZERO START ASSIST system shown in the free, online, downloadable, FSM. It (the info and free pictures), can be found in the Section Four *Fuel and Emission Control Systems*. It's a free download. It has pictures/graphics/words (The Free Download of the FSM). Get one today before they run out or raise the price. There's also a Christmas Discount if you hurry. There's even some talk on the web about a REBATE......if you hurry, and are one of the first fifty people to download the FREE download of the FSM.
OR......go to your local Used Book Store and buy a Hayne's Manual for five to ten bucks.
OR go to EBAY and buy a factory fsm for cheap. Generally about thirty to forty bucks plus shipping.
OR buy a factory manual from MAZDATRIX for about a hundred bucks. Brand new. Not free. Plus shipping. No rebate.

Looks like oil temp sensor to me. I believe that it connects near the oil filter, on the block, not on the oil filter pedastal.
I didn't know that it was actually for the sub zero start...

#2 is just a ventillation hose for the charcoal cannister. It doesn't connect to anything. I asked this question about a month ago. You can take the cannister off and block the lines off to give you a bit more room.

Awesome, thanks a lot guys. The FC'll be running sometime this week after I get my last sensor in and starter.
And FYI, I do have the Haynes manual. But unfortunately, it sucks for a lot of stuff. Basically the entire fuel and emissions is covered in 3 steps: Disconnect, Label, and installation is the reverse of removal. And it doesn't have a "Random-Parts-that-you-may-have-recieved-in-a-bucket-along-with-your-car-that-has-the-engine-out" section. lol.
Trust me guys, if I had taken everything out, I would know how to put everything back in. And I've also been slowly printing out the service manual at my school but at 80 pages on some of them and incredibly slow *** printer, it takes a while.
Once again though, thanks a lot. Every little thing helps.
