Leading and trailing Spark Plugs

Hey guys, today I changed my spark plugs on my 88 GXL..... when I went to the parts store, they sold me two different spark plugs, two for the leading (bottom) plugs, and two for the trailing (top) plugs. When I went to pull out the spark plugs that were in my motor from when my old mechanic swapped the motor in, I found that all four plugs were the same L leading spark plugs. Also, the two plugs for the front rotor (closest to nose of the car) were only hand tight, and covered in a fuel smelling sludge. My question is A: how much damage was done to my motor by this half assed mechanic, and B: what can I do to fix this situation. Thanks for any input on this situation................... Sean

A) none, you just may have had a tiny bit of power loss in the meantime.

B) put the right plugs in and in the right locations and tighten them up.

added:

c) drive the car and enjoy it, don't worry about the faulty previous tune up.
