A knock sensor is just that, a sensor that detects knocking, pinking, pre-ignition, detonation, whatever you want to call it. It sends a signal to the ECU when knocking occurs and the ECU retards the timing until it stops, to avoid engine damage. Only Turbo FC's have them, but most EFI cars from the last 15 or so years have them.
The FC's knock sensing system pretty early technology is only effective up to 3500-4000rpm. Beyond that the engine's making too much other noise for the knock sensor to reliably detect knocking. It's mainly used to avoid knocking caused by low-rpm lugging.
