Just Purchased a 10AE and its Locked up

So I traded my 95 Miata straight up for the 10AE and even with the locked up engine I think I came out ahead Now I am looking at rebuilding. According to the previous owner the car had the enigne rebuilt 5k miles ago and the guy that owned it at the time babied the crap out of it, saw a coolant leak (we think its the top cap just not sealing at this point) and then let it sit for 1.5 years. Sunday we went over and put new plugs in it (it had standard plus not rotary ones in it) put some trans fluid in the housings and see if it would start. So after a while we got it running and it wouldnt really rev over 6k and TONS of smoke and wouldnt idle. It died twice and we let it sit for a second and tried again, a few rotations of starting and it gave a loud thunk sound and locked up. Now it will not move at all and Im wanting to just yank it and rebuild it. Ive been searching around and it seems that it shouldnt be too hard (I was a Mazda tech when the 8s came out and while Ive replaced many a Renesis I have yet to really get inside one).

My goal for the car is to just get it running to start and drive it for a while stock and eventually do 720cc secondaries, a Haltech RE, DW fuel pump, and 10-12lbs of boost. With that plan in mind, Id like to use the RA super seals and the race springs, and the Atkins gasket set. Is there anything else I would need to purchase to do the rebuild assuming the engine in the car has reusable parts. Hopefully when it was rebuilt semi-correctly and with the low mileage on the rebuild it should be ok to just get the stuff Im looking at. I plan on pulling the engine out this Friday and getting it pulled apart on Saturday to see exactly what happened inside and what I need.

You really won't know what you need until you tear it down. Dont forget special tools (Socket for the flywheel nut, torque wrench, engine stand adapter) Also look into the FD corner seal springs.

Im good friends with a local Subaru performance shop (which is where I will be doing the engine work) and we've pulled apart 1 13b just because it was laying around so we have all of the tools we need.

Doesn't look like that gasket kit comes with any side seals either hmmm. So I guess at this point I just need to get it torn down and see where I stand then come back and ask more questions.

Good for you! Good luck on the build. As a new owner of a 10AE, I think you'd find my signature humorous!

Have fun!

P.S. Post some pics! We all love to see a nice 10AE!

Beyond the engine it's very good. Interior other than a missing clock surround, the center console not being screwed down and not having a radio is 8/10 the body is probably 7/10 some minor rust starting at the top of the windshield and missing the top of the seal, cracked windshield and paint flaking around the front fender openings because he had some 350z wheels on it. Paint otherwise looks amazing for sitting over a year and it came with repainted and cleared 10ae wheels so I'll be going back to those.

I only have really crappy pics right now lol. Saw the car for the first time Saturday night then spent 4hrs Sunday trying to get it to run even before we had finalized the trade. And by the time I even though to take a pic it was getting dark and the hood was open. I hope to snap a few better pics this weekend when we yank the engine out.

And yeah your signature is about exactly right for me lol.
